Are you an energy systems expert? Are you passionate about technologies and systems for a sustainable and secure energy future? We have an opening for an Energy Systems Scientist to support and lead projects in our diverse energy portfolio spanning climate resilient infrastructure, carbon drawdown, and distributed energy grids. In this role, you will contribute to Livermore’s Carbon Initiative, with the ambitious goal of rolling back the causes of climate change. You will participate in Livermore’s Energy Programs, including Energy and Resource Security and Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience to design the next generation of sustainable and secure energy systems. This position is in the Energy group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Analyze the security, performance, cost, lifecycle impacts, and policy ramifications of diverse energy innovations.
- Design components, technologies, and systems that substantially improve the climate resilience and carbon drawdown potential over state-of-the-art.
- Assess the resources that are available and required to meet energy, sustainability, and resilience goals at local, regional, and national scales.
- Participate in complex projects that field-demonstrate carbon drawdown and energy resilience.
- Communicate the importance and results of climate and infrastructure resilience R&D to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Publish analysis and results of Carbon Initiative and Infrastructure Resilience projects in the peer reviewed literature.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 level
- Lead and manage supporting personnel who conduct analysis under your direct supervision.
- Lead and develop teams to conduct and support technology demonstrations.
- Develop new work with Federal, State, and commercial sponsors and partners in these areas.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- PhD. in an energy-focused field such as Earth Science, Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience in the evaluation and/or development of clean, resilient energy/environmental technology, including carbon management and energy networks.
- Significant experience working in a team setting on energy and environmental projects.
- Experience with formal energy systems analysis tools such as lifecycle assessment (LCA), technoeconomic analysis (TEA), risk assessment matrices.
- Experience in energy, climate, and resilience policy analysis.
- Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to interact with a diverse group of stakeholders.
Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level
- Significant experience leading or managing projects and teams on energy and environmental topics.
- Significant experience collaborating across research (university, laboratory) and commercial (industry) institutions.
- Significant experience developing new projects with State and Federal sponsors.
Qualifications we desire
- Experience with geospatial analysis of energy resources and infrastructure systems.
- Strong record of scientific/technical publication
