Job Description

We have an opening for a Group Leader for the Radiative Properties group in the High Energy Density Science (HEDS) Section of the Physics Division. In this position you will interact with Directorate management teams and other program and project managers/leaders across the Laboratory to coordinate staffing, recruitment, research thrusts and resources to support projects on radiative properties and x-ray spectroscopy for High Energy Density (HED) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments.  You will be expected to work with Line and program management teams to strengthen and broaden the experimental scope beyond established areas related to radiative properties of plasmas (opacity, atomic physics, radiative transport, x-ray spectroscopy, etc.) This position requires you to have funding to cover the majority of your own time through programmatic and other direct funding sources. This position is in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide leadership and technical guidance, including scientific and programmatic direction to a diverse group of scientists.
  • Collaborate with line and programmatic management to ensure staffing needs are met and group members are considered for available assignments.
  • Maintain a close interface with program managers as well as theoretical and modeling groups to ensure effective scientific support and teamwork.
  • Promote relationships that advance strategic goals of the Laboratory, including working closely with programmatic leaders, and developing collaborations with several Directorates.
  • Mentor technical staff to promote professional development, conduct staff and performance management activities in collaboration with Physics Division Management, including succession planning.
  • Develop new scientific programs and research proposals for Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) and external sponsors and funding agencies.
  • Foster interactions with colleagues and institutions in both domestic and international communities, such as academia, industry and government institutions.
  • Foster publications in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
  • Perform other others as assigned.


Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level

  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers and interact with programmatic sponsors within the Laboratory and with external funding agencies.
  • Guide and provide strategic direction for experimental radiation transport, opacity, atomic physics experiments, including LDRD funded activities.
  • Provide solutions to highly complex problems in HED and ICF physics.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Experimental Physics or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience and subject matter expertise in experimental physics, including use of x-ray spectroscopy techniques at large-scale HED physics facilities. 
  • Expert leadership skills and experience supervising others in a technical environment.
  • Ability to delegate effectively and to lead, motivate, and build highly complex interdisciplinary teams to work toward programmatic and institutional goals.
  • Significant experience working effectively as part of a management team on behalf of the section, division, directorate, or Laboratory.
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills, specifically the ability to explain and present highly complex ideas, as well as to influence employees and all levels of management.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level

  • Nationally recognized expert in one or more areas of radiative properties, atomic physics or x-ray spectroscopy, or closely related field.
  • Ability to apply, lead, and/or develop principles, experimental methods, and technologies related to understanding radiative properties such as opacity, atomic physics or x-ray spectroscopy.
  • Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction for projects;  expert level communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • In depth knowledge of ICF and HED physics
  • In depth knowledge of one or more program government sponsors
  • Familiarity with Physics Division and NIF personnel and projects.
  • Experience in developing new scientific programs and research proposal for LDRD and external funding.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory
