Job Description

We're looking for a graduate level Computer Support Technician intern to provide computer support for unclassified systems in a heterogeneous environment to solve a variety of technical problems. You will be responsible for installing, configuring, securing and maintaining systems, as well as loading layered products and troubleshooting system problems.

You will

  • Install new computer system hardware and upgrades.
  • Install and configure printers and other peripherals.
  • Install and configure operating systems, computer security and applications software.
  • Secure computer systems and monitor to ensure that they comply with Department of Energy (DOE) – mandated orders.
  • Diagnose and resolve moderate system, printer, and network problems.
  • Provide technical assistance to the user community.
  • Maintain appropriate technology, computer security, and safety training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Under limited direction and supervision will conduct research in assigned area.
  • Performs technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientist in scientific research and development projects.

Qualifications

  • Must be continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree or a recent Bachelors or Masters graduate within one year.
  • General working knowledge of desktop and/or server computer hardware and operating systems (viz., Mac OS and/or Windows OS).
  • Experience of administering, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing Apple and/or Windows computer systems.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the skills needed for a customer support role to include a focus on listening, rapport-building, good communication skills, friendly and approachable nature, and courtesy and patience.
  • Effective interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work with customers and team members.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Mac and/or Windows computer security protocols to manage user accounts, and control and monitor access.
  • Demonstrated academic achievement in Computer Science, technical support, or a related field.
  • Experience applying basic Computer Science principles to solve technical problems.

Security Clearance

None required.  However, this position involves U.S. Export Control; this work must be performed by a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. national, or U.S. protected individual (e.g., refugee, asylee)).

If your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process.  This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check.  (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

Wireless and Medical Devices

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
