Pay Range
$93,204 - $204,636
$93,204 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level
$111,804 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description
We have multiple openings for Energy Technology and System Analysts with backgrounds in physical and life sciences, information sciences, engineering, operations research, science and technology policy analysis, economics, or decision analytics to provide techno-economic analysis. You will work with a diverse group of scientists and engineers supporting LLNL’s Carbon Initiative within the Global Security (GS) Directorate’s Energy and Homeland Security Program and join us to solve critical climate change problems. You will analyze and assess the impact of innovative and complex energy technologies and systems associated with achieving greater efficiency, optimization and sustainability. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Research, design, and optimize carbon management technologies and energy systems from concept through speed up scale-up and demonstration, working under limited direction and using independent judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria .
- Conduct techno-economic assessments of various carbon management technologies or energy systems to enhance performance and reduce costs.
- Perform uncertainty analyses to forecast the impact of technical and economic uncertainties on the success of commercial carbon dioxide removal or renewable energy projects.
- Analyze and develop solutions to address moderately complex system integration challenges between new Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies and existing or future energy systems, while also creating frameworks to enhance Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) capabilities for these technologies.
- Conduct life cycle assessments to evaluate the environmental impact of innovative energy technologies and optimize system parameters to reduce the carbon footprint compared to current state-of-the-art solutions.
- Apply engineering expertise to assess the trade-offs between performance and costs of early-stage energy technologies using established and/or innovative methods.
- Design computational tools to optimize biomass resource supply chains and product distribution at regional and national levels.
- Collaborate effectively within, and contribute to, a multidisciplinary team to achieve research goals and fulfill technical projects and organizational objectives.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars, and meetings.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
- Actively participate in and lead discussions in the conception, design, and execution of original research to address complex problems.
- Pursue independent research that complement team objectives and engage with a broad network of scientists both internally and externally.
- Establish and nurture strong partnerships with the climate mitigation and renewable energy sectors, including proactive engagement with key decision-makers on analytical topics to support informed decision-making and to exert significant influence on major objectives as needed.
- Lead and manage independent projects focused on developing complex models and in-depth analyses to support the application, scaling, and commercialization of technologies.
- Identify and drive innovative program growth opportunities through collaboration with existing and prospective sponsors, and by crafting compelling proposals using advanced knowledge, best practices, and creative concepts and techniques.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in physical science, engineering (e.g., chemical, mechanical, civil, environmental) or relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, physics, material science), or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in one or more key areas: energy systems analysis, technoeconomic analysis, lifecycle assessment, uncertainty analysis, geospatial analysis, analytic computational modeling and simulation, and/or energy policy analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake original research and effectively communicate findings in peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated ability to use and/or develop models that provide insight to various issues at the intersection of technology development and economic investment decisions.
- Science and technology knowledge and/or ability to understand issues related to climate change, carbon drawdown cardon dioxide removal and more.
- Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and project managers to develop and apply these capabilities, and to inform engineering decisions.
- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to travel.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level
- Significant experience in leading and motivating multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration across diverse groups.
- Significant experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technical approaches to broadly defined tasks and projects.
- Advanced knowledge and experience applying effective analytical and problem-solving skills to complex problems.
- Proven track record as a project coordinator and/or principal investigator, managing projects with competing priorities, undefined deliverables, and high visibility.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Qualifications We Desire
- Hands on engineering experience with pilot, demonstration or commercialization scale engineering projects.
- Experience in technology commercialization.
- Knowledge and experience in topics like carbon accounting, environmental regulations, policy design for renewables or carbon removal systems, economics and market analysis.

Security Clearance
