Pay Range
$125,160 - $187,908 Annually
$125,160 - $155,400 Annually for the 390.1 level
$151,344 - $187,908 Annually for the 390.2 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
Job Description
We have an opening for an Engineering Technical Supervisor in support of the Environmental & Mechanical Test Group. You will perform a complete range of both programmatic activities and administrative supervision. This position may be at the Site 200 (Livermore) or Site 300 (Tracy) and may involve periodic travel to other NNSA/DOE sites. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate and supporting Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program.
This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
You will:
- Provide technical leadership to the mechanical properties of explosives team. Duties include administering a wide range of materials properties testing, incorporating thermal and mechanical conditioning, and compiling data.
- Collaborate with the technical staff to apply innovative technical expertise on the definition of functional requirements, solve complex technical and resource problems, and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitations.
- Provide direct administrative supervision and oversight to individuals in mechanical, electronics, and operations technical staff, and other matrixed support personnel including personnel actions and administration of policies and procedures.
- Perform personnel related functions including hiring activities, performance evaluation, peer grouping, salary management, promotions, and fostering staff development.
- Maintain close working relationships with group leaders and program management to ensure timely, cost-effective execution of supportive engineering services.
- Develop, prepare, present, and participate in required design reviews, reports, procedures, and other communications in support of technical and administrative assignments.
- Provide technical leadership of the engineering design and assembly process, ensuring the quality is produced in adherence to Programmatic Standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 390.2 level
- Provide highly advanced technical and related administrative oversight and supervision in the areas of applied engineering technology including planning, design, fabrication, assembly, project support, testing, and evaluation where the qualitative and quantitative complexity of the project assignment demands original and innovative problem solutions.
- Establish and/or modify guidelines, techniques, and procedures, and evaluate and determine appropriate work methods, and setting priorities to meet schedule requirements and objectives.
- Communicate and inform management and appropriate outside collaborators of project status, budget, schedule, and workforce effort levels.
- Represent division and program at meetings, briefings, and other activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Mentor subordinate personnel/team members for leadership succession planning and provide career development and technical guidance. Assess, determine, and direct staff training requirements, efforts, and opportunities.
Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of and significant experience with handling procedures for pressure and vacuum systems.
- Experience providing administrative and technical leadership through the effective utilization of people and available resources.
- The ability to obtain certifications in high explosives handling: High Explosives Support and or High Explosive Handler.
- Experience in mechanical engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, drawing requirements, and reporting.
- Knowledge of institutional Work Control processes and documentation.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with people at all levels and ensure that program requirements are conveyed in a timely manner.
- Advanced interpersonal, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively communicate, present, and explain technical information and provide feedback to direct reports.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a Mechanical Competent Worker.
- Ability to travel.
Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level
- Extensive experience working in, leading, and supervising multidisciplinary teams.
- Significant experience making independent fundamental decisions regarding highly complex technical problems.
- Demonstrated and extensive experience leading a team, project, and/or group to meet project requirements and deadlines.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience preparing performance appraisals and participating in ranking and salary processes.
- Experience with radiological worker operations and procedures and with nuclear weapons technology.
- Experience in Vault Type Room (VTR) operations and management.

Site 300
Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
Security Clearance
This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
Pre-Employment Drug Test
