Pay Range
$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level
$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Group Leader for the Advanced Engineering Analysis Group (AEAG) within Computational Engineering Division (CED)’s Weapons Analysis & Methods Section (WAM).
The group will be an administrative unit within CED. You will provide administrative leadership for the group and contribute to its technical and strategic leadership. You will maintain project assignments for most of your time and will report to the WAM Section Leader.
This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
You will
- Provide leadership, supervision, and technical, strategic, and administrative direction, guidance, and support to group team members in accomplishing project/program goals and objectives.
- Lead, carry out, and/or coordinate recruiting, hiring, training, career development, and performance and salary management activities as needed to meet Section, Division, and programmatic staffing, employee development, and performance related needs, including providing career counseling, mentoring, and coaching.
- Collaborate closely with programmatic personnel and external sponsors to ensure current and future technical and staffing needs are being addressed.
- Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to Group personnel and activities and collaborate with project principals and group personnel to define programmatic objectives and assist in the achievement of program goals.
- Assign work and remain cognizant of the technical goals, solution approaches, and progress of all members’ projects.
- Attend Section and Division meetings, plan and conduct monthly Group meetings, and conduct institutional training sessions as required.
- Interface with other groups within CED to identify and promote collaborative efforts and establish strategic partnerships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level
- Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
- Serve as subject matter expert in analysis for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Proven advanced ability to lead and promote technical projects.
- Significant experience and advanced knowledge of engineering analysis in some of the following areas: structural mechanics elasticity, plasticity, material constitutive behavior, failure mechanics, and/or rigid body mechanics and dynamics, heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation), explosive material analysis, hydrodynamics, radiation sciences, aero sciences, formal design reviews, technical presentations and safety behaviors.
- Significant experience applying ParaDyn and/or Diablo software and familiarity with other developmental, government, or commercial tools such as ALE3D, Abaqus, Ansys, and/or other mechanics/multi-physics analysis code suites.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
- Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across Engineering divisions and Laboratory directorates / programs.
- Effective leadership, interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and actively participate in ranking sessions.
Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level
- Extensive experience in the leadership of technical projects, project planning, and execution.
- Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of complex problems.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors, and to positively represent the Program and the Laboratory.
Qualifications We Desire
- PhD in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering.
- Experience in nuclear weapon system design, requirements, and materials.
- Significant experience building, directing, and leading cohesive project teams.
- Knowledge of Laboratory management and structure, including supervision, budget, diversity, and equal opportunity policies and processes.
- Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following topical areas: nonlinear structural mechanics, material constitutive behavior, failure mechanics, rigid body dynamics, heat transfer, explosive material analysis, hydrodynamics, radiation sciences, aero sciences.
- Proficiency with UNIX and experience with large code environments for High-Performance Computing and Python Programming.
