Pay Range
$6,200.00 - $7,520.00 Monthly
This position is under a step structure. Salary is based on academic level. Transcripts are required.
Job Description
We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee to participate in collaborative research in concrete decarbonization and cement geochemistry at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to provide technical and scientific support in preparing and analyzing cement and concrete samples for a range of composition and microstructure for measurement by various material characterization techniques. Focus areas may include sample preparation and the use of including but not limited to thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and synchrotron-based materials characterization techniques. Some local travel/commute may be required with participation in collaboration in the east Bay Area. This position is in the porous media group in the Atmospheric Earth and Energy Division.
This is a one-year Academic Graduate Appointee, open to those who have been awarded a degree at the time of the employment offer.
Essential Duties:
- Provide technical and scientific support for existing research in concrete technology and cement chemistry.
- Perform laboratory sample preparations, dry/wet sample separations of construction materials.
- Prepare samples for measurement using thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and/or mass spectroscopy.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of observations and experimental methods/findings.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Provide weekly progress reports.
- Contribute to scientific publications and reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- BS/MS in civil engineering, environmental engineering, material science, or in a related science discipline.
- Experience working in an analytical laboratory or materials characterization laboratory with knowledge in cement and concrete.
- Experience in cement and concrete sample preparation
- Familiarity with the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and in general reagent/sample preparation techniques.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate technical information effectively with peers and managers.
- Ability to travel to offsite locations and interact effectively with collaborators.
- Proficient in MS EXCEL
Desired Qualifications
Experience in low-carbon footprint cement and concrete
Experience in back scattering imaging and sample preparation
- Experience in life cycle assessment
