Pay Range

$165,570 - $255,060

$165,570  - $212,604  Annually for the SEL.3 level

$198,630  - $255,060  Annually for the SEL.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Nuclear Materials Engineering Group Leaders with responsibilities for leading groups of engineers, business analysts, risk manager and document specialists to support the Nuclear Materials Program within the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program. The Nuclear Materials Engineering Groups develop requirements specifications, system design and architecture, detailed component design, manage the integration of systems, risk management, and operations for nuclear material applications in support of Defense Programs. As a line supervisor, your responsibilities will complement your assigned programmatic activities. You will work with program leadership to develop a broad range of technical staff, including identifying current engineering capability gaps within the Nuclear Materials organization and developing staff to meet these needs. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Supervise and provide administrative direction, guidance, support, mentoring, coaching, and promote teamwork for group personnel. Participate in performance reviews, peering, and salary management processes.
  • Recruit, hire and onboard new staff as needed to meet programmatic staffing needs in the WTE Program Element.
  • Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to group personnel and activities and collaborate with project principals and group personnel in defining employee work assignments.
  • Exercise advanced level skills in the application and development of nuclear materials engineering industry best practices, and/or business principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Foster and uphold the DTED’s mission, vision, and values through leadership of Nuclear Materials Group personnel.
  • Lead and engage in thoughtful engineering peer reviews and design reviews to ensure the technical excellence of our designs and our workforce.
  • Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Serve as subject matter expert in nuclear materials engineering for the program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Use creativity and innovation to lead the application and development of principles, theories, and concepts related to nuclear materials engineering.
  • Pilot change by developing new projects or programs, modifying approaches, and/or redefining customer requirements to impact operations or directions.
  • Provide strategic technical advice to management and external customers. Serve on external scientific or technical committees, positively representing the program and the Laboratory.
  • Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems or Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent level of education and related experience.
  • Detailed understanding of nuclear facilities and operations in a high hazard environment and governing regulatory requirements.
  • Significant experience in working with and mentoring career staff of different disciplines.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
  • Effective leadership, interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and able to actively participate in ranking sessions.
  • Advanced facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to promote and maintain productive relationships across programs and directorates.

Additional qualifications, at the SEL.4 level

  • Expert knowledge of, and significant experience in utilizing, systems engineering principles and tools for program execution, including defining, developing, and executing nuclear materials processes.
  • Significant experience in the leadership of personnel for technical projects, including establishing staffing pipelines and technical mentorship across a broad range of activities.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory policies and practices and applicable NNSA orders.
  • Knowledgeable of nuclear materials processes, engineering, assessments, and design.
