Job Description

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Atmospheric Modeling Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in atmospheric modeling for a variety of applications including wind energy, climate impacts on urban infrastructure, flow over urban and complex terrain, and transport and dispersion of hazardous materials.  Research projects for these applications require multi-scale atmospheric modeling, spanning from global climate scales to the microscale, and will require development of atmospheric simulation codes for improved functionality and performance. Familiarity with turbulence, surface-layer, or land-surface modeling is desired, as is knowledge of modeling in urban environments and atmospheric physics parameterizations.  You will work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, programmers, and project managers to develop and apply new modeling capabilities for wind energy assessments, meteorological forecasts in complex and urban terrain, and assessing the consequences of hazardous atmospheric releases.

This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division, Atmospheric Science Research and Applications Group, and will also involve working with the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC, see https://narac.llnl.gov).

In this role you will

  • Conduct creative research in the field of atmospheric modeling.
  • Develop, validate, and apply computer models performing dynamically downscaled atmospheric simulations over complex terrain.
  • Analyze model and observational datasets relevant to wind energy, climate impacts, and transport and dispersion applications.
  • Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science, mechanical, civil or environmental engineering, computational science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with numerical methods and modern model development practices.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: atmospheric science, multi-scale or microscale atmospheric modeling, turbulence, surface-layer, or land-surface modeling, regional atmospheric flow, atmospheric boundary layer dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, large-eddy simulation, atmospheric chemistry, aerosol science, or field data analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming languages including C++, Fortran, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Experience conducting research in atmospheric science, engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Travel as required to collaborate with researchers or attend meetings and conferences.
  • Experience with large model and observational datasets, modern programming environments, and visualization techniques.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with numerical weather prediction (NWP) models or global circulation models (GCMs).
  • Familiarity with MPI/OpenMP or GPU programming for supercomputing.
  • Experience with atmospheric boundary layer turbulence, uncertainty quantification, ensembles, statistical analysis, or nuclear/radiological sources and effects.
