Job Description
We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in particle and cloud microphysics modeling in atmospheric simulations at large-eddy simulation scales. Research will entail model development in a new exascale atmospheric code to represent particle and cloud microphysics in a Lagrangian framework and cloud-particle interactions. Simulations will be compared to observations and experimental data. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, programmers, and project managers to develop, implement, and apply these modeling capabilities in a state-of-the art environmental simulation framework, which will then be used to explore particle formation for transport simulations of hazardous materials and cloud formation for applications in climate science. Familiarity with numerical methods and physical process modeling approaches for the atmosphere, particles, or clouds is required. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division, Atmospheric Science Research and Applications Group.
You Will
- Develop numerical methods and physics parameterizations appropriate for modeling the microphysical processes of particles and clouds in the atmosphere.
- Implement modules into a state-of-the-art C++ based multiscale environmental solver with adaptive mesh refinement.
- Conduct research in the physics of particle formation and evolution and particle-cloud interactions
- Conduct research in multiscale atmospheric simulation and the transport of hazardous materials
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of code physics development and scientific inquiry.
- Work with other experts in a large team to facilitate synergistic model development and high-impact science
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research in journal publications and at professional conferences.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests of your choosing
- Interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology, engineering, nuclear science, or similar field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: numerical simulation methods for atmosphere, transport and dispersion, cloud or particle microphysics, or advanced scientific programming in C++
- Demonstrated ability to develop independent research pathways as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with Lagrangian models for microphysics or material transport
- Experience with multiscale, urban, or large-eddy simulation scale atmospheric modeling
- Experience with adaptive mesh refinement
- Experience with GPU programming
