Pay Range
$127,680 - $163,968 Annually for the SES.2 level
$153,210 - $196,788 Annually for the SES.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Network Engineer with a focus on Cloud Infrastructure. You will be a member of the Cloud Center of Excellence integrated project team where you will design, implement, and support the cloud infrastructure and processes to provide a rapid, secure, and cost-effective use of cloud for the laboratory. You will play a critical role in enabling the workforce to leverage cloud technologies. You will be responsible for cloud governance, management, and security. This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division within the Computing Directorate, in support of LivIT.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Collaborate with systems administrators, network engineers, developers, stakeholders, and leadership to develop consensus-based outcomes around cloud infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, management, and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate on the design and architecture of a hybrid, multi-cloud environment, including providing a secure and robust network backbone.
- Design and deliver advanced automation and infrastructure-as-code solutions to streamline provisioning and management of deployed green- and brown-field resources.
- Engage with laboratory scientists, researchers, and developers to understand their workloads and help drive solutions toward cloud-native technologies.
- Draft and maintain architectural documentation and artifacts, including as-builts, runbooks, and demonstration code.
- Stay up to date with the latest industry hybrid network architectures and best practices.
- Present and communicate solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.3 Level
- Collaborate with customers on high availability and disaster recovery models across a hybrid network environment.
- Design and implement security controls consistent with existing security baselines in a hybrid multi-cloud, multi-account environment.
- Diagnose, resolve, and document highly complex network problems, including packet and protocol analysis.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Extensive experience with network system design, configuration, implementation, documentation, and operations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of network engineering principles, including routing, switching, and VPN or Overlay technologies, including BGP EVPN, IGPs, such as OSPF or IS-IS, IPSec, or other WAN/DCI technologies.
- Broad production experience deploying and managing AWS core services such as S3, Lambda, EC2, RDS, VPC and CloudWatch, or equivalent Azure services.
- Proficient experience with programming languages or automation frameworks, including Python, CloudFormation or Terraform, or CI/CD tools such as CodePipeline, Jenkins, Gitlab, or equivalent Azure services.
- Broad experience with the server-less approaches using AWS Lambda, ECS or EKS, API Gateway, or equivalent Azure services.
- Proficient interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with stakeholders and team members.
Additional Qualifications at the SES.3 Level
- Significant experience with cloud security infrastructure, including IAM policy design, SCPs, KMS, STS, or similar services in an Azure environment.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills and experience solving problems by analyzing protocol interactions collected in packet traces.
- Experience training and mentoring team members in network and cloud engineering and architecture
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience designing and implementing resilient production architectures and the ability to evangelize those design principles to project stakeholders AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA), AWS Solutions Architect Professional (SAP), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), or comparable industry certification from another vendor.
- Experience with Scrum in an agile development environment.
