Job Description
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in climate change mitigation, at the energy-food-water nexus, to develop and pursue research addressing the large-scale mitigation potential of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods (incl. ecological and geological) and agrivoltaics in the United States. This research will also include aspects of sentiment analysis around carbon management technologies (e.g. CDR and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage), social/policy impacts, and systems for a sustainable and secure energy future. The Energy Systems Postdoctoral Researcher will support and lead projects in our diverse energy portfolio spanning carbon drawdown, measurement reporting and verification frameworks, and community engagement. In this role, you will contribute to Livermore’s Carbon Initiative, with the ambitious goal of rolling back the causes of climate change. This position is in the Energy & Carbon Management group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division. This posting may be used to hire more than one postdoctoral researcher.
In this role you will:
- Analyze soil gas flux data from field surveys and write papers for peer review on the topic of agrivoltaics (i.e. solar panels over crop fields).
- Analyze potential co-benefits and negative impacts associated with different carbon management methods on regions across the United States (e.g. counties, states, tribal nations, watersheds, etc.).
- Assess the resources that are available and required to meet energy, sustainability, and resilience goals at local, regional, and national scales.
- Assess and communicate the importance and results of carbon drawdown R&D to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Publish analysis and results of Carbon Initiative and Climate Security and Resilience Mission Focus Area projects in the peer reviewed literature.
- Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD. in an energy-focused field such as Earth Science, Environmental Science, Engineering of any discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Biogeochemical background
- Scientific communication skills
- Academic and report publishing
- Interest in climate mitigation/adaptation technologies
Qualifications we desire
- Data analysis, with skills or interest in learning geospatial (GIS) analysis techniques
- Experience with ecological fieldwork, particularly involving soil gas fluxes to/from soils.
- Experience collaborating across research (university, laboratory) and commercial (industry) institutions.
- Interest in developing new projects with State and Federal sponsors.
