Job Description

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in cloud microphysics modeling and observations.  You will work on constraining cloud microphysical properties with observations and simulating their response to global climate change using a Global Cloud System Resolving Model.  Familiarity with cloud modeling or remote sensing/radar meteorology is desired.  The position will require working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, programmers, and project managers to analyze data, apply new modeling capabilities, and validate atmospheric simulations. 

This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division, Atmospheric Science Research and Applications Group.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct creative research in the field of cloud microphysics.
  • Develop, validate, and apply algorithms to simulate or observe clouds and hydrometeors.
  • Analyze model and observational datasets relevant to climate and weather.
  • Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in atmospheric science, mechanical, aerospace, civil or environmental engineering, computational science, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: clouds dynamics, aerosol or cloud microphysics, mesoscale modeling, radar meteorology, or computational fluid dynamics.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, Fortran, C++.
  • Experience with high performance computing or interest in learning this skill.
  • Experience conducting research in atmospheric science, engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Able to travel as required to collaborate with researchers or attend meetings and conferences. 
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations. 

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience or familiarity with radar or satellite observations.
  • Experience or familiarity with microscale, mesoscale, or global modeling.
  • Experience or familiarity with uncertainty quantification, ensembles, and statistical analysis.
