Pay Range

$104,370  - $129,588 Annual for the G04.3 level

$125,160  - $155,400 Annual for the G04.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Communications Specialist/Communications Manager to support the Design Physics (DP) Division and the Weapon Physics & Design (WPD) Program within the Laboratory’s Strategic Deterrence (SD) Directorate. As part of the management team, you will work closely with all levels of management, program leaders, scientists, and administrative staff to communicate programmatic strategies, highly complex science research, and technology information to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences. This position is in the Technical Information Department (TID) and will be matrixed to the SD Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Define communications strategies, messages, and key deliverables for a variety of projects; coordinate all aspects of development, and review work of team members. Participate in and oversee all aspects of publishing from concept through writing, review, production, and distribution.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and processes; develop metrics and process improvement methods; may represent organization on working groups or committees.
  • Provide strategic communications planning for short- and long-term projects by developing and implementing key deliverables for high-level strategic communications, managing complex project schedules, tracking production costs, and coordinating the work of others.
  • Develop and implement project plans involving complex documents/projects with multiple authors who may be affiliated with other government, international, or commercial entities.
  • Serve as project manager and collaborate with senior managers, team members, and peers for a variety of complex and specialized projects to meet Directorate and programmatic objectives.
  • Develop original technical content, provide writing and editing services, and/or coordinate the full spectrum of editorial and communication services (e.g., editing and writing for external reviews, stakeholder briefings, reports, news, and multimedia assets, including web-based content).
  • Interpret complex technical information and translate into clear, accurate, relevant, and compelling products appropriate to the targeted audience(s) and into various forms of easily understandable communications.
  • Collaborate with Derivative Classifiers, Directorate Reviewers and the Office of Classification and Export Control to evaluate and determine the classification level of publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the G04.4 level:

  • Provide consultation and strategic planning support to the DP and WPD senior management teams in the development of highly complex communication materials and presentations that recognize the viewpoint of stakeholders and ensure that communications products are consistent with DP Division and WPD Program goals and strategies.
  • Work with Laboratory management and subject matter experts to devise and lead tactical communication plans and projects, which may require working with individuals affiliated with other government, academic, or commercial entities.
  • Serve as a resource to programmatic staff, subject matter experts, authors, and technical reviewers regarding technical communications techniques, processes, and cost-effective alternatives to producing a variety of products, including manuscripts, presentations, social media, and web-based content.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, media relations, or a scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and broad experience in the area of technical communications.
  • Experience in strategic and executive communications, as well as in planning, developing, organizing, and writing technical content effectively across various types of communication platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards; may have experience with web production tools.
  • Significant experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups in order to translate and develop communication materials that are easily understood by business-oriented customers including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
  • Project management experience leading complex production and technical writing and editing assignments; in-depth knowledge of multiple electronic and print-driven production processes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud software suite, and Confluence.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, clients, team members, peers, and stakeholders to meet organizational objectives and ability to handle sensitive or restricted documents and information.
  • Self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight, shifting schedules, including effective interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

In addition, at the G04.4 level:

  • Expert written and verbal communication skills and experience managing multiple, large technical writing and production assignments and collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers and other technical contributors.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional editing/writing skills in a wide variety of scientific areas and experience working with highly visible and sensitive technical content.
  • Expertise in the theory and techniques of high-quality technical communication for both printed and web-based publications.

Qualifications we Desire

  • Advanced degree in English, communications, journalism, media relations, or in a scientific area.
  • Journalistic writing experience.
  • Thorough understanding of LLNL’s primary mission of ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the nuclear stockpile.
