Pay Range

$127,680 - $163,968 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a chemist to provide support to National Ignition Facility (NIF) radiochemistry projects. Your work involves high-purity separations of radionuclides from irradiated targets and other materials and performing analysis of the resultant separated materials with various nuclear decay counting methods.  This position is in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

You will

  • Independently prepare samples for nuclear data measurements by purifying radionuclides from production matrices by ion exchange and other methods
  • Perform sample digestion and analysis of radionuclides produced in reactors and/or accelerators.
  • Perform nuclear counting data reduction and calculations as needed for reporting.
  • Maintain laboratory records for quality control and quality assurance purposes.
  • Maintain chemistry laboratory equipment, supplies, and reagents; interact with vendors or technicians for equipment purchase or repairs.
  • Provide solutions to radiochemistry problems of moderate complexity.
  • Interact with diverse scientific teams to support multiple projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • B.S. in radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, geochemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Broad experience in purification of trace metals or radionuclides from complex matrices for nuclear data or environmental measurements.
  • Broad experience in use of nuclear decay counting detectors and/or other instruments and methods for quantitative analysis of inorganic analytes.
  • Broad experience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
  • Broad experience performing quality evaluation of analytical data.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment.
  • Broad experience working with radioactivity (>1 nCi).

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience preparing ultra-high purity samples in methods typical of clean room work.
  • Experience with accelerator or nuclear reactor production and isolation of radionuclides
  • M.S. in radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, geochemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to coordinate complex tasks by interacting independently with professionals in the execution of responsibilities.
