Pay Range
$148,650 - $190,932 Annually for the SES.3 level
$178,410 - $229,116 Annually for the SES.4 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
ReWe have an opening for a Modeling and Simulation Software Developer to support the Engagement Modeling project in the Weapon Technologies and Engineering Program. This position is in the Applications, Simulations and Quality (ASQ) Division within the Computing Directorate.
You will work with a team of security experts and Software Engineers to support and apply software and security engineering skills on a variety of application platform to identify and remediate security issues, lead integration efforts for new deployment services and design and develop new functionality for existing environments. You will work in an environment that focuses on problems of interest to LLNL and Department of Energy (DOE) programs as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment. You will apply fundamental knowledge of HPC software development and contribute to technical projects using creativity and imagination.
In this role you will
- Obtain and deploy the latest updates of industry/government standard tools and ensure that they available to users.
- Develop software necessary to allow users/analysts to run simulation at scale in HPC.
- Develop tools necessary to connect/federate existing tools to create a combined ability utilizing best aspects of each.
- Advise and aid other developers, including engineers, in writing and adding capabilities.
- Maintain QA and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD [ES1] [BJ2] ) infrastructure to ensure verified and credible tools as well as robustness.
- Prioritize and establish feature plans working with users and project management.
- Support the development of documentation and training material.
- Support users with identifying bugs and provide fixes.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 Level
- Independently solve moderately complex problems existing throughout a heterogeneous distributed environment.
- Provide technical leadership and guide efforts to develop tools or processes for improving the efficiency and technical operations of users and staff.
- Effectively perform duties using independent judgment and minimal direction.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Proficiency in securing Unix/Linux systems in a production environment.
- Strong proficiency with C/C++.
- Broad experience with Java, Python, Bash, or similar scripting / languages, particularly for use in automation processes.
- Strong understanding of software development fundamentals (object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, unit testing).
- Ability to work with subject matter experts to develop tools for engineering applications. [ES1] [BJ2] .
- Advanced Knowledge of software testing and quality assurance strategies.
- Familiarity with version control systems.
- Experience learning new languages including non-standard domain specific languages with engineering concepts.
- Knowledgeable with CI/CD.
- Extensive experience as a software developer.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment, as well as the ability to work effectively with minimal guidance and as part of a team.
Additional Qualifications at the SES.4 Level
- Highly advanced experience with implementing solutions to meet Engineering programmatic needs.
- Highly advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute to creative solutions to complex problems in cross-organizational efforts.
- Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in a technical team environment and to represent LLNL in public forums.

Qualifications We Desire
- Broad experience with High Performance Computing environments.
- Experience in GitLab, pytest, and Sphinx documentation.
- Experience with combat simulation frameworks AFSIM, EADSIM, JCATS/JLOD, STORM, ITASE, Sonic.
- Global modeling and data visualization, such as, GIS, Ansys STK, Worldwind or similar.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
