Pay Range

$123,960.00  - $190,932.00  Annually

$123,960.00  - $159,168.00  Annually for the SES.2 level
$148,650.00  - $190,932.00  Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Dynamic Radiographic Researchers seeking to impact national security by designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments in the field of nuclear weapon science. You will collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team providing an emphasis on radiography as a primary diagnostic for explosively driven experiments. These positions are in the Design Physics Division within the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

In this role you will

  • Design and conduct experiments in the field of nuclear weapon science with an emphasis on flash radiography as a primary diagnostic for explosively driven experiments.
  • Learn and utilize specialized computational tools and techniques for processing and analyzing radiographic imaging data.
  • Optimize flash radiography diagnostic setups and techniques.
  • Characterize x-ray sources and detectors for aiding quantitative radiographic measurements.
  • Apply analysis techniques to plan experiments with an emphasis on simulating radiographic data.
  • Collaborate on multidisciplinary teams to further advance radiographic diagnostic techniques.
  • Share results via conferences, reports/publications, and potential interactions with stakeholders.
  • Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Additional responsibilities at the mid-career (SES. 3) level

  • Define experiment radiographic requirements in the field of nuclear weapon science emphasis on flash radiography as a primary diagnostic for explosively driven experiments.
  • Develop and advance computational tools and techniques for processing, simulating, and analyzing radiographic images.
  • Identify, advocate, and facilitate the advancement of diagnostic capabilities in the area of flash radiographic imaging of explosive driven experiments.
  • Manage and oversee multiple parallel complex projects and experiments at different stages of development.

Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience conducting applied research with hands-on experience with experimental and diagnostic hardware.
  • Experience with and knowledge of scientific data analysis.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and experience authoring high-quality reports/publications and delivering effective technical presentations.
  • Commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.

Additional qualifications at the mid-career (SES.3) level

  • Advanced knowledge of physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Fluency in Python, C/C++, Matlab, or similar programming language(s).
  • Significant experience with leading, mentoring, and/or collaborating within teams.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication and experience delivering top-quality research in relevant areas of science and engineering.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in one or more science disciplines, such as shock hydrodynamics, solid/fluid mechanics, materials science, particle transport, radiation transport, nuclear physics, plasma physics or physical chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience with dynamic radiography as a diagnostic.
  • Knowledge of x-ray sources and detectors.
  • Experience working around explosives and/or other high hazard materials or effects (such as ionizing radiation).
  • Experience developing creative and innovative technical solutions in a radiography-relevant field or in image processing and analysis.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team-research environment, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative in addressing challenging problems.
