Pay Range

  • $ $94,770 - $121,716 Annual (TSS.1)
  • $ $113,730 - $146,076 Annual (TSS.2)

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Mechanical Design & Controls Engineer. You will provide mechanical engineering analysis and design support for buildings and high-performance computing systems.  This position is within the Project Management Office (PMO) and may be matrixed to the Livermore Computing Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.1 or TSS.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Provide engineering analysis and design in support of projects being performed to improve mechanical systems in High Performance Computing and Data Center buildings.
  • Provide engineering support to other design team members by collecting and organizing data required during the design process.
  • Prepare mechanical construction drawings and specifications.
  • Review and approve construction submittals and observe construction field activities and installations.
  • Coordinating critical systems outages in a 24/7 operating data center.
  • Assist with mechanical equipment and systems retro-commissioning/commissioning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the TSS.2 Level

  • Contribute to the development of detailed mechanical engineering designs and construction packages.
  • Provide mechanical engineering solutions for a diverse range of moderately complex data center systems.
  • Develop approaches to solve moderately complex technical issues using independent judgement and analysis.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures for completing tasks or projects in mechanical engineering; knowledge is expected to be largely based on academic background.
  • Knowledge of water cooling and distribution for data centers.
  • Sufficient computer skills, including word processing and programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of operating and managing Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to provide high level customer service.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

In Addition at the TSS.2 Level

  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures for completing tasks or projects in mechanical engineering.
  • Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Registration as a Professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California or reciprocity from another state within 24 months, and relevant previous experience performing independent work.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Membership in professional organizations such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
  • Knowledge of the California Building Codes.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD or Revit to prepare design drawings.
  • Ability to use Computational Fluid Dynamics software to model data center airflow.
