Pay Range

$36.50  - $45.32  Hourly for the 593.2 level
$43.78  - $54.35  Hourly for the 593.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Network Technician to provide network support for unclassified and classified systems in an HPC environment. You will be responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network hardware and software, and troubleshooting of complex network infrastructures, with emphasis on data center operations. This position is in the Livermore Computing (LC) Division’s Network and Security Operations Group within the Computing Directorate.

This position requires an on-site presence multiple days a week, and therefore will have limited telecommuting options.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will 

  • Provide general network support and monitoring capabilities as part of the Network Operations Team for HPC systems.
  • Troubleshoot and document general network issues, and apply corrective action/repairs to the problem.
  • Install and configure connectivity for new and existing HPC systems, including fiber/copper infrastructure installs for ACI deployments, and complete network configuration utilizing automation scripts.
  • Participate in the decommission process of older HPC systems & system relocation activities, including fiber/copper infrastructure clean up.
  • Manage and track spare and production network hardware inventory.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and perform occasional work outside normal business hours to provide support for network operations and maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 593.3 level

  • Provide advanced technical support and monitoring capabilities for HPC networks.
  • Troubleshoot and document moderately complex network issues, and apply corrective action/repairs to the problem.
  • Perform a variety of high-level technical tasks including installation, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of HPC networks.


  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Associate’s Degree in a computer-related field or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Experience with system installations, including fiber, cabling, and network configurations.
  • General working knowledge of network hardware, software, protocols, and principles.
  • Basic working knowledge and experience working with Linux system administration, text editors, interrogating system failure logs, changing file permissions, commands and utilities.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with customers and team members with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Additional qualifications at the 593.3 level

  • Advanced knowledge of HPC operating systems, networking concepts and/or protocols.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience working with Linux system administration, commands and utilities, including familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., shells, Perl, Python).
  • Significant experience with working in a datacenter network environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • CCNA certification.
  • Experience with configuration and maintenance of network firewalls, such as, Palo Alto Network firewalls.
  • Familiarity with ACI network concept.
  • Support COMSEC and data encryption using 3rd party appliances or IPSEC tunneling.
