Pay Range
$36.50  - $45.32  Hourly for the 531.2 level
$43.78  - $54.35  Hourly for the 531.3 level


Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Electronics Technologist/Senior Electronics Technologist to provide technical support to the Megajoule Neutron Imaging Radiography (MJOLNIR) Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) project.   You will be responsible for assisting in the assembly, installation, and operations of the dense plasma focus including electrical and vacuum systems.  You will help with the installation of data and signal lines while supporting radiation and plasma diagnostics.  You will help maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked laboratory.  This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

You will 

  • Clean and assemble components suitable for high vacuum systems.
  • Assist in the ordering, tracking, and installation of essential hardware for experimental builds.
  • Operate moderately complex to complex high voltage equipment and perform measurements on a variety of components and systems including the dense plasma focus.
  • Maintain stock of laboratory supplies and laboratory cleanliness.
  • Perform general facility related and technical functions such as detailed maintenance, testing, upgrades to equipment control, and interlock systems checks.
  • Perform craning, rigging, and forklifting of essential systems under general supervision.
  • Perform laboratory machining and soldering of electrical equipment
  • Interpret and analyze schematics and operating manuals.
  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while adhering to written safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 531.3 level 

  • Provide advanced technical support for experimental work in a specialized R&D facility and analyze complex preliminary data during design or prototyping of components, systems, or equipment.
  • Provide guidance to fabrication support with construction and development of specialized electronics and high current and voltage systems.
  • Maintain, test, calibrate, and repair of complex electronics circuits, instrumentation and control, as well as diagnostic systems.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate’s degree in electronics or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve moderately complex analytical problems.
  • Experience performing unique fabrication and modification of highly specialized parts and subassemblies.
  • Intermediate skills, knowledge, and abilities in electronics technology including theory, design, and component to system level with the understanding of analog and digital electronics.
  • Experience with ordering and tracking items subject to deadlines using spreadsheets as part of a larger team.
  • Effective communication presentation and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to achieve goals.

Additional qualifications at the 531.3 level 

  • Advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in electronics technology including theory, design, and component to system level with the understanding of analog and digital electronics.
  • Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of advanced technical problems.
  • Advanced communication, interpersonal, presentation, feedback, and teamwork skills and abilities.
