$123,960.00 - $159,168.00 Annually for the SES.2 level
$148,650.00 - $190,932.00 Annually for the SES.3 level

We have an opening for an Applied Physicist/Engineer to support several projects in the plasma engineering group. You will work on z-pinch and dense plasma focus fusion experiments, compact neutron source experiments, building and using radiation and plasma diagnostics, and other technically challenging problems. You will be responsible for developing and executing new measurement techniques to help diagnose the physics of z-pinch plasmas and the associated neutron yield while bringing innovation and technical excellence to bear on challenging technical problems. You will travel as necessary to interact with sponsors and customers. Opportunities exist for collaborations with the Fusion Energy Sciences Program. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
- Operate and conduct experimental campaigns to assess z-pinch plasma devices on pulsed-power-driven devices.
- Use and upgrade existing suite of diagnostics and analysis tools to improve understanding of plasma physics and neutron production.
- Compose periodic progress reports and update safety plans/work control documents (WCD’s) in accordance with experimental needs.
- Maintain an awareness of technical literature in assigned areas.
- Conduct and prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Travel as necessary to interact with sponsors and customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
- Provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established and/or innovative methods in the areas of diagnostic development and improving neutron yield.
- Serve as a technical expert in formal and ad hoc groups assembled to address pressing imaging and radiation source applications in national security.
- Propose, contrive, and conduct in-depth briefings to advise management and government sponsors.
- Propose and execute significant experiment campaigns to substantiate programmatic goals.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Plasma Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad experience in operation and analysis of plasma experiments and plasma physics / radiation diagnostics.
- Experience working with vacuum systems, pulsed power systems, neutron time-of-flight systems, imaging systems, antenna-based electromagnetic probe design and use, laser interferometry / polarimetry, optical spectroscopy, or neutron imaging.
- Comprehensive knowledge of plasma physics or nuclear engineering.
- Experience authoring and delivering technical and scientific reports, presentations and publications.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
- Ability to travel.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level
- Advanced knowledge in pulsed-power-driven plasma experiments or pulsed fusion experiments.
- Significant experience in designing novel diagnostics or engineered solutions to diagnose and improve neutron yield in plasma.
- Ability to lead independent work.
Qualifications We Desire
- PhD in Plasma Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
