Pay Range
$36.50 - $45.32 Hourly for the 532.2 level
$43.78 - $54.35 Hourly for the 532.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have multiple openings for Fabrication Technician / Fabrication Technician Specialists to provide electrical / electronic fabrication, assembly, test, installation, activation, and maintenance support for diagnostic, instrumentation, controls, and safety systems. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022, a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.
Other responsibilities may involve testing, characterization, and documentation support. You will collaborate with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate and supports the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Provide moderately complex electronic fabrication, installation, test, documentation, and maintenance support for NIF Control Systems’ hardware including but not limited to cable terminations (e.g., coaxial, fiber optics, power, multi‐conductor), connectors (e.g., BNC, MS, D), electrical and electronics components, chassis, printed wiring boards, electro‐mechanical hardware.
- Utilize industry standard techniques and fundamental knowledge to control electrostatic discharge around susceptible components.
- Use standard fabrication tools (e.g., soldering iron, crimping tool, mechanical hand tools & power tools, drill press, power saws, Rotex punch, shears) in the fabrication and repair of electrical/electronic hardware.
- Perform equipment tests, collect data, and document results.
- Read, interpret, and follow one‐line electrical diagrams, cable plant documentation/schematics and follow specific layout and assembly diagrams to construct and package electromechanical units.
- Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures.
- Work with engineers and technicians to install, modify, test, maintain, and commission electronic instrumentation and equipment, providing feedback on inconsistencies or gaps in documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 532.3 level
- Provide advanced fabrication/installation support while working alongside junior Fabrication Technicians providing mentorship and guidance on standard NIF fabrication processes.
- Work with engineering as necessary to obtain additional information, clarification, or provide feedback on inconsistencies or gaps in documentation.
- Support complex technical tasks under minimal supervision including the ability to make independent decisions and/or take the lead on a variety of technical problems.
- Oversight of electrical diagnostic instrumentation equipment used in a laboratory (hand-held meters, probes, TDRS, etc.) and personnel safety.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Associate degree in Electronics Technology, or related technology, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of and ability to work from verbal and written instructions, sketches, drawings, prints, and electronic schematics independently, under general supervision.
- Fundamental technical skills in cable/chassis fabrication technology and standards.
- Experience working in a customer service/field support environment requiring safety considerations.
- General support experience and ability to work in and on large electrical/electronic systems including fabrication, test, documentation, and maintenance using standard fabrication tools.
- Effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal/teamwork skills and abilities.
Additional qualifications at the 532.3 level
- Experience providing advanced fabrication/installation support while working alongside junior Fabrication Technicians including providing mentorship and guidance.
- Ability and experience collaborating with engineering staff as necessary to obtain additional information, clarification, or provide feedback on inconsistencies or gaps in documentation.
- Experience and fundamental knowledge needed to work independently on complex technical tasks including the ability to make independent, decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Fundamental knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) to ensure equipment and personnel safety as well as knowledge of electrical diagnostic instrumentation used in a laboratory (hand-held meters, probes, TDRS, etc.).

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
