Pay Range
$136,500.00 - $175,272.00 Annually for the TSS.3 level
$163,740.00 - $210,288.00 Annually for the TSS.4 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
The Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate has an opening for a Senior Safety Basis Analyst to support the institutional safety function. The primary support role is in the review and maintenance of Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs) for Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities at LLNL. The selected candidate will bring a range of experience in hazard and accident analysis for nuclear, radiological, chemical, waste storage, and explosive facilities. The selected candidate will also work on an independent, self-directed basis on tasks of significant complexity while interacting with management, both internal and external to the Laboratory. The selected candidate will report to the Safety Basis Division Leader.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Provide technical leadership in the review and maintenance of safety basis calculations, Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) documents, Documented Safety Analyses (DSA), Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), and nonnuclear safety basis documents.
- Perform or review analyses for a Radiography Facility, Hardened Engineering Test Facility, Tritium Facility, Plutonium Facility, and Waste Storage Facilities.
- Perform hazard identification for processes, operations, materials, wastes, and potential energy sources used in facilities.
- Perform hazard evaluation, including definition of accident scenarios, risk ranking and control selection.
- Evaluate key structures, systems, and components to develop functional requirements and performance criteria.
- Provide input on technical or operational issues for specific projects that require drawing from applicable regulations and DOE standards relevant to safety basis.
- Represent the Division to other organizations at LLNL.
- Interface and respond to Independent Verification Reviews (IVRs), Readiness Assessments (RAs), and other assessments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.4 level
- Provide subject matter expert advice to management on technical and engineering analysis to support regulatory compliance for programs/clients, including associated workload planning, scheduling, and staffing analyses.
- Utilize analytical software (e.g., ALOHA, EPIcode, HOTSPOT, MACCS2, CFAST) to address issues that are not well defined and require creative conceptual planning.
- Use independent judgement to analyze and identify complex data collected from engineering facilities for risk, safety, environmental, or reliability concerns and recommend corrective actions when required.
- Mentor junior and early career safety analysts.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- Experience applying 10 CFR 830, DOE-STD-1027, and other associated safety guidance to Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities and < Hazard Category 3 facilities.
- Experience with hazard identification and evaluation to facilitate accident scenario development, material release estimates, failure mechanism assessment, and documentation of accident consequences and likelihood.
- Extensive experience writing and reviewing technical and/or regulatory documents and maintaining administrative processes.
- Experience working in nuclear or radiological facility, nuclear reactor, chemical facility or refinery, or high hazard (e.g., explosive) facility.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact with a wide spectrum of personnel, including mid-level management.
- Extensive experience working independently as well as leading a team of technical and professional personnel.
- Experience using atmospheric dispersion modelling and/or fire modelling software (e.g., ALOHA, EPIcode, HOTSPOT, MACCS2, CFAST) or equivalent.
Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level
- Advanced knowledge or significant experience with hazard identification and evaluation to facilitate accident scenario development, material release estimates, failure mechanism assessment, or documentation of accident consequences and probability of occurrence.
- Subject matter expertise in, advanced knowledge of and significant experience working in chemical (e.g., refinery), high hazard (e.g., explosive), radiological, and/or nuclear facility or nuclear reactor operations.
- Broad experience in regulatory compliance, specifically in applying 10 CFR 830.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills to interact with a wide spectrum of personnel, including senior management.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master's Degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- Significant experience with operations, research, or oversight in a nuclear facility environment.
- Specific experience with plutonium or tritium operations.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
