Pay Range

$104,220.00  - $129,384.00  Annually for the 337.1 level

$126,120.00  - $156,576.00  Annually for the 339.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for an Electronics Engineering Technical Associate to support the Weapon Technologies and Engineering Program (WTE). You will provide direction, establish scope of work, develop and implement advanced technical support in the design of experimental, research, and prototype equipment and components associated with mechanical/electronic components and systems. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Develop original solutions to complex technical problems, test parameters, troubleshooting test materials while determining appropriate work methods and establishing priorities in order to meet programmatic requirements.
  • Initiate, prepare, conduct and/or participate in design/process reviews, schedules, budgets, and other briefings where concepts are determined and translated into possible courses of actions providing expertise in design intent, QA functions, Surveillance and Configuration Management requirements.
  • Collaborate with scientists, program and facility engineers, technical staff, and facility safety personnel inside and outside the work group on both an individual and team basis using a high degree of independent discretion and judgement.
  • Oversee the conceptual and detail design process, component part fabrication, assembly and testing of mechanical or electronic systems and associated diagnostics.
  • Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various LLNL design processes. Engage with production agencies to support timely execution of production and surveillance deliverables.
  • Mentor engineering and technical support staff on proper techniques, expectations, and execution of evaluation processes, documentation requirements, planning, review, manufacture, and testing of various mechanical or electronic systems associated with the Nuclear Weapon Engineering Program.
  • Represent DTED as a subject matter resource during formal Engineering Evaluations (EE’s), Process Reviews, and Surveillance activities at Production Agencies and other NNSA sites observing and verifying repeatable fabrication, inspection, assembly, and surveillance processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 339.2 level

  • Define, interpret, design, oversee fabrication and operation of experimental test prototypes and associated highly complex diagnostics utilizing comprehensive knowledge of mechanical or electronic systems.
  • Provide highly advanced support to DTED/NWE program solving complex technical problems, preparing and conducting technical presentations, and frequently making decisions using a high degree of independent discretion and judgment.
  • Lead engineering technical staff and provide highly advanced mechanical/electronic support and hands-on operations through the design and assembly of complex components and systems based upon specifications from engineers, physicists, or facility personnel.
  • Perform extensive independent technical tasks and projects and support research efforts.
  • Provide solutions to a diverse range of complex issues/problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.




  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related technical discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in engineering hardware design, fabrication, assembly techniques, materials, testing processes, and/or manufacturing methods.
  • Knowledge of project planning, budgeting, and resource planning.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and experience working independently and as part of a team, as well as leading a technical team with multidisciplinary personnel in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner for presentations and interaction with other technical staff members.
  • Ability to clearly articulate, enforce, and interpret design intent and requirements of component and supporting drawings and other required documentation.

Additional qualifications at the 339.2 level

  • Strong leadership skills directing large or small multidisciplinary teams to carry out mission deliverables in a direct and well-organized manner.
  • Ability to provide mentorship to engineering and technical support staff on proper techniques, expectations, and execution of evaluation processes, documentation requirements, planning, review, manufacture, and testing of various mechanical or electronic systems associated with the NWE Program.
  • Extensive experience collaborating with high level technical personnel and senior managers at the division and department level management or equivalent.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge and experience with weapons systems, diagnostic equipment, and testing
  • Experience in applied Technical Business Practices and product definition related to the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Knowledge of NAP 401.1A or other quality control requirements.
  • Working knowledge of CAD systems, configuration management systems, and ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
