Job Description
We're looking for an experienced Spacecraft Electrical Engineer to work on projects and initiatives with a focus on U.S. national security. You will be a member of an engineering team that will provide space mission engineering solutions for both national security and basic science investigations with sponsors including National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and other government agencies. As an engineering team member, you will work on all aspects of space system hardware – from design and analysis to assembly, integration, and test. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Work as an integral part of a small team of scientists and engineers to develop technical proposals for spacecraft missions including payload electrical specifications, spacecraft subsystem electrical specification, and cost and schedule estimates.
- Lead electrical engineering design for spacecraft subsystems from conceptualization, simulation, part grade specification, layout, fabrication, and acceptance testing under limited direction.
- Exercise technical knowledge of the limitations of proven concepts and practices on electrical systems, equipment, and/or hardware to correctly evaluate alternatives or risk associated with using or replacing a nonconforming component for orbital requirements.
- Participate in spacecraft subsystems design reviews, integrated test planning and execution.
- Design and integrate flight software into embedded platforms, with an emphasis on hardware interfacing using low-level C, assembly, and/or RTL.
- Provide technical direction as the primary spacecraft electrical subsystem technical contact.
- Interface with customer organizations, payload science experts, analysts, manufacturing engineers, and project staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
- Apply advanced electrical engineering solutions and technical analysis to develop and implement creative solutions to resolve highly complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Lead a team supporting spacecraft launch and early operations, maintaining spacecraft health and safety, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting anomalies.
- Support mission planning functions, including design and analysis of spacecraft electrical requirements, electrical component assurance test plan, and operational concepts.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access, which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad aerospace and/or spacecraft engineering experience with designing, assembling or testing flight hardware.
- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience with one or more of the following spacecraft systems and subsystems: attitude, propulsion, power, data handling and on-board processing, thermal, structures and mechanisms, telemetry, tracking, and control (TT&C), and payload.
- Experience estimating cost and schedule of spacecraft projects.
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for complex problems that require in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to colleagues, management or sponsors.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level
- Advanced knowledge of concepts related to aerospace and/or electrical engineering of spacecraft and demonstrated experience leading the development of proposals to meet space mission customer requirements.
- Significant experience and demonstrated track record of success developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of complex multi-disciplinary problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple parallel tasks, often requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and prioritization of tasks toward predetermined long-range targets.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance.
- Demonstrated knowledge of space mission engineering principles, practices and application in electro-optical system analysis and design in either laser or imaging systems.
- Proficiency with high speed/embedded system design.
