Pay Range
$136,500 - $183,888 Annually for the TSS.3 level
$163,740 - $220,632 Annually for the TSS.4 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have multiple openings for Facility System Engineers to apply advanced technical knowledge in support of ongoing operations and modifications in DOE Hazard Category 3 and 2 nuclear facilities. You will apply advanced technical knowledge in the mechanical engineering area as a System Engineer responsible for assigned mechanical systems in nuclear facilities. These systems include ventilation, compressed gas, gloveboxes, and fire suppression systems. These positions are in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Monitor the operational status of assigned systems to anticipate the need for maintenance, repair, or replacement of components due to wear or aging, and prepare detailed assessment reports to facility management on the results.
- Identify, monitor, and provide recommendations for the timely procurement and assurance of adequate inventory of spare parts for assigned systems.
- Provide engineering technical support for the repair, modification, and operation of assigned systems.
- Lead others in the development of solutions and approaches to complex problems and issues necessary to support plant operations, maintenance, and equipment troubleshooting using sound engineering judgment and advanced mechanical engineering knowledge.
- Develop and lead the technical review of facility/system related procedures and work instructions to ensure technical adequacy and ease of implementation.
- Develop project design and other documents for operations, maintenance, and testing and provide solutions for complex engineering problems and troubleshooting related to assigned system.
- Conduct reviews and provide advice to mid-level internal management, customers, and colleagues on system-related design, operation, and maintenance issues.
- Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the TSS.4 level
- Develop and deliver technical presentations to programmatic clients, WCI senior management, and DOE/NNSA Livermore Field Office / Headquarters, plus be able to field any associated questions.
- Represent the organization as a technical resource and provide subject matter expertise in the design, maintenance, and operation of ventilation, compressed gas, gloveboxes, and fire suppression systems.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent level of education and related technical experience.
- Advanced knowledge of engineering standards and practices related to facility-related mechanical systems.
- Significant experience in the design, operation, troubleshooting, or maintenance of facility mechanical systems, that may include ventilation, filtration, compressed gas, fire suppression, or piping systems.
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience in developing or reviewing calculations and specifications, drawings, and sketches, and determining design criteria for facility mechanical systems, modifications, renovations, and upgrades on small projects and on occasional larger projects.
- Ability to identify, develop and effectively communicate recommendations to facility and senior management regarding facility and safety equipment modifications with proven record of ability to implement recommendations.
- Significant experience developing work process and troubleshooting documents and safety documentation.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment which includes scientists, engineers, and technicians, and advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.
Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level
- Substantial experience and subject matter expertise in facility mechanical engineering and industry code compliance.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, reviewers, and stakeholders.
Qualifications We Desire
- Professional Engineering Registration in Mechanical Engineering in California or reciprocity from another state within twelve months.
- Significant experience working with facility mechanical systems.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
