Pay Range
$29.23 - $37.86 Hourly for the 533.1 level
$36.50 - $47.28 Hourly for the 533.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Mechanical Technician/Mechanical Technologist supporting the N Program in the Global Security (GS) Directorate. You will provide support LLNL's Render Safe Operations (RSO), emergency preparedness and response activities. In that role, you will provide technical support for custom sponsor training aids, prototype equipment, experimental research, installation of complex high-voltage, high-current devices, and development projects. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Provide basic technical support, while applying fundamental knowledge, to engineers and technical staff for preparing and coordinating laboratory experiments.
- Design, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble basic mechanical components and systems, using established work control processes and procedure requirements.
- Work from drawings, and verbal instructions to assemble, and test various mechanical designs.
- Machine components using conventional lathe, mill, and other manufacturing process machines.
- Apply a basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to solve basic mechanical problems.
- Set up equipment, general troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor modifications of simple hardware including pressure and vacuum systems.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while working in the laboratories.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and audits of the laboratories with an emphasis on housekeeping.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.2 level
- Design; fabricate; maintain; assemble and disassemble general mechanical components and systems. This includes planning; selecting material; equipment; and determining solutions.
- Provide general technical support, while applying intermediate knowledge, to engineers and senior level technical staff for preparing and coordinating laboratory experiments.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, and high-level personnel to provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks.
Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Associate degree in an engineering technology such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Basic understanding of machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tools, and inspection techniques.
- Basic technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Experience designing basic mechanical components and systems.
- Basic knowledge of high-pressure systems.
- Ability to maintain documentation relating to experimental assemblies.
- Effective verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Ability to travel domestically in support of offsite experimental test campaigns.
Additional qualifications at the 533.2 level
- Intermediate knowledge of CAD software package (Solid Works or Pro E) to produce 3D models and generate 2d detail drawings for fabrication.
- Intermediate understanding of high-pressure systems.
- Effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
