Pay Range
$113,730 - $153,264 Annually for the TSS.2 level
$136,500 - $183,888 Annually for the TSS.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We're looking for a Laser Safety Officer to to support the Laser Safety Office within the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate. The Laser Safety Officer will provide comprehensive support to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) programs and operations performing work that requires application of lasers and other non-ionizing radiation safety program requirements. You will support workers, supervisors, and managers from across the Laboratory to ensure lasers and other non-ionizing radiation work activities are performed in accordance with applicable standards. The Laser Safety Officer supports the Institutional Laser and Non-Ionizing Radiation (e.g., ultraviolet, microwaves, and radio waves) Safety Program. This position is in the Safety Engineering (SE) Functional Area.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Interpret the requirements of ANSI Z136.1 American National Standards Institute for the Safe Use of Laser and implement the applicable Integrated Safety Management (ISM) and LLNL ES&H Manual requirements regarding laser safety.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and reports of occupational injuries, illness, and exposures for possible causes. Prepare documentation and recommend appropriate measures to eliminate or mitigate reoccurrence.
- Conduct walkthroughs, observations, audits, assessments and reviews of laser and other non-ionizing radiation systems, related work, and program effectiveness.
- Independently recommend and approve personal protective equipment as required to assure personnel safety.
- Collaborate with the Safety Education Training Section to develop, instruct, and maintain training courses that provide effective, efficient, and responsive training experiences.
- Interface with trained technicians for the installation, updating, repair and documentation of laser laboratory control measures.
- Consistently track and develop safety requirements as specified in work control documents including interlock checks, laser parameter tables, and supporting documentation.
- Develop, manage, and maintain specific laser and other non-ionizing radiation safety program documents as designated by the subject matter expert.

Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, engineering, or in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene program or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Experience and/or comprehensive knowledge involving Non-Ionizing Radiation, including ultraviolet light, microwaves, radio frequencies, and magnetic fields.
- Knowledge and understanding of electrical requirements of ANSI Z136.1 American National Standards, safety rules and regulations, and the ability to interpret and interface various electrical components using these standards.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain moderately complex technical or operational information.
- Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement actions/solutions for moderately complex problems.
- Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
- Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects, and meeting schedules.
Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level
- Advanced experience and ability to lead independent work involving Non-Ionizing Radiation, including ultraviolet light, microwaves, radio frequencies, and magnetic fields.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.
- Experience engaging a variety of stakeholders to build relationships that enable successful mission execution and enhancing safety performance.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree in a physical science, engineering, or in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene program or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent work involving Non-Ionizing Radiation, including ultraviolet light, microwaves, radio frequencies, and magnetic fields.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in industrial, laboratory and construction settings. Experience in industrial safety, material handling, cranes, hoisting and rigging, trenching & excavation, electrical safety, LOTO, working at elevated heights and ergonomics in both laboratory R&D and industrial settings.
- Certification by the Board of Laser Safety Certified Laser Safety Officer and/or Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) and/or ABIH Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or ABHP Certified Health Physicist.

Site 300
Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
