Pay Range

$29.23 - $37.86 Hourly for the 533.1 level
$36.50 - $47.28 Hourly for the 533.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have openings for Nondestructive Testing (NDT)/Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Technicians or Technologists to provide basic to moderately complex technical support for radiographic, ultrasonics, and others NDT/NDE methods. You will work as part of the NDT/NDE team by providing technical support to a variety of Laboratory missions as needed. This work will involve being trained and certified to work with hazardous materials including radioactive and explosives materials. You will utilize a variety of industrial x-ray, ultrasonic, and other methods as needed. You work in Livermore and our remote locations [i.e., Tracy, CA (Site 300), Nevada National Security Site (NNSS)]. Some overtime and occasional to frequent travel may be required to meet program goals. These positions are in the NDE group within the Material Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide basic technical support applying basic knowledge to NDE staff working under close supervision.
  • Apply basic knowledge of industrial x-ray and ultrasonic equipment.
  • Apply basic knowledge of industrial ultrasonic contact techniques.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance and system testing.
  • Collect data using fundamental knowledge of NDT/NDE methods.
  • Follow written/verbal operational and safety procedures.
  • Practice good housekeeping in experimental, work, and office areas.
  • Follow ES&H, security, and best business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.2 level 

  • Provide general technical support applying intermediate knowledge working under general supervision.
  • Perform moderately complex NDE operations, maintenance, system testing and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Provide general mechanical fabrication in support of NDE projects.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in engineering, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience; or a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
  • Successful completion of Level I classroom training requirements and general examinations Radiographic and Ultrasonic Testing to obtain and maintain certification(s) per the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) SNT-TC-1A or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain training and qualification programs prior to working in/with hazardous areas and materials such as radioactive and explosives.
  • Basic knowledge of industrial x-ray/ultrasonic methods and support equipment.
  • Basic skills with hand and power tools, personal computers, and software (Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to read, interpret, follow technical documentation, and possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift ≤30 lbs. and work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the 533.2 level

  • Current or previous Level II certification in Radiographic Testing within 18 months and the ability to maintain certification(s) per ASNT SNT-TC-1A or equivalent.
  • Intermediate skills and experience interpreting NDE codes and techniques.
  • Intermediate knowledge of industrial x-ray/ultrasonic equipment and support equipment.
  • Intermediate skills and understanding of moderately complex radiographic and ultrasonic techniques.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience handling explosives.
  • Experience handling hazardous materials.
