Job Description
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate how the genomic traits of soil microbes (including ecophysiology and population dynamics) shape microbiome interactions and regulate the persistence of microbial residues under changing moisture and redox regimes. You will support a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team applying isotope-targeted, genome-resolved metagenomics, modeling and other unique ‘omics technologies, to quantitatively evaluate traits in ‘wild’ (uncultured) soil microbiomes and identify their system-scale impacts on soil biogeochemistry. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems Group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division and will support the DOE-funded Microbes Persist Soil Microbiome Science Focus Area project.
You will:
- Analyze next generation sequence (NGS) data from large experimental studies (metagenomic, metatranscriptomic) using bioinformatic and molecular tools.
- Perform independent computational biology research of microbiome functionality and its links to ecosystem fluxes.
- Contribute as a team member to analyze diverse omics datasets from larger collaborative projects.
- Use bioinformatic tools to process quantitative stable isotope probing results.
- Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of advanced research to link genome resolved metagenomic traits with soil carbon stability.
- Collaborate with a diverse team of multidisciplinary scientists and technical personnel to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Ecology, Environmental Sciences or another relevant field.
- Strong programming skills in Python and R or a related data analysis language.
- Broad knowledge of NGS analysis tools and methods, including assembly, annotation and classification tools and databases, with the ability to rapidly and judiciously evaluate new tools.
- Familiarity with genome binning and annotation for mixed communities (including eukaryotic, prokaryotic, and viral data) with specific expertise in evaluating functional capabilities (based on genes, biochemical pathways) of metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs).
- Analytical experience with gene expression (transcriptomic, proteomic) or metabolite data.
- Experience diagnosing data quality issues, creating reproduceable and documented workflows, and producing data reports and visualizations.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Publication record in peer reviewed literature.
Qualifications We Desire
- Familiarity with stable isotope probing and connecting biogeochemical measurements to genomic data.
- Experience with command line tools and executing jobs in HPC environments.
- Knowledge of maintaining software and code in dedicated virtual environments (e.g. conda).
- Prior experience with geochemical analyses or analytical equipment (GC, HPLC, LC-MS, SIMS).
Additional Information
All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
Position Information
This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
