Pay Range
$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level
$148,650 - $200,328 Annually for the SES.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Thermal Test Engineer in the Environmental and Mechanical Test Group. You will conduct experimental testing on a variety of projects related to thermal response experiments, environmental testing, data acquisition, general instrumentation, and measurement diagnostics. This position will be in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
- Conduct thermal tests on various systems, analyze results, and author reports, under limited direction.
- Design specialized hardware to test objects to controlled thermal profiles using resistive heaters, radiant lamp arrays, convection chambers, propellent fires, or other methods.
- Use computer modeling and thermal analysis tools (examples include Thermal Desktop and ANSYS) to perform thermal simulation and analysis that inform test designs.
- Conduct experimental thermal testing and correlate results with computer models.
- Operate test equipment (thermal chambers, specialized heating systems, etc.) using fundamental knowledge of best test and measurement practices.
- Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in formal engineering design reviews.
- Perform supporting engineering calculations for structural, mechanical, and diagnostic systems.
- Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity that require the evaluation of readily identifiable factors using standard techniques and methodologies.
- Interface with peers, both internal and external to the organization, to complete various tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level
- Guide the completion of projects and conduct technical tasks and/or set specific technical strategy and direction for self and/or others.
- Work as a technical expert on a multidisciplinary team and monitor or direct activities of technical staff as lead of a technical project.
- Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on tasks and projects.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of heat transfer in engineering materials/structures (including conduction, convection, and radiation).
- Comprehensive knowledge of material engineering properties and associated analysis and simulation methods used in thermal problem solving.
- Experience with thermal simulation and analysis including conduction, convection, and radiation using thermal computer codes.
- Comprehensive knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas: instrumentation sensors, general data acquisition theory, and instrumentation best-practices.
- Knowledge or experience in electrical power system and controls design relevant to thermo-mechanical systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and government regulated environment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level
- Advanced knowledge of thermodynamics and thermo-mechanical systems.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
- Experience with environment definition and test specification development.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
