Pay Range

$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level

$148,650 - $200,328 Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

Do you have a passion for cloud native technologies? Do you want to be on the forefront of LLNL’s cloud native computing platform? We are looking for a Cloud Native Solutions Engineer, that will help teams adopt and migrate existing applications and workloads to run on our on-prem cloud native computing environment. If you are looking to effect change and make an impact from the ground up, keep reading.

We have an opening for a Cloud DevOps Engineer . You will work with researchers to utilize cloud native technologies for research and applications. You will play a key role in helping to define and develop a cutting edge on-prem cloud native computing platform. This position is in the Global Security Computing Applications  Division (GS-CAD) in Computing, matrixed to the Global Security Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

In this role you will 

  • Contribute to the architecture of a cloud native computer platform that meets requirements for 24x7 uptime, and efficient, frequent software delivery.
  • Function as a team member while architecting, implementing, and managing cloud native applications utilizing tools, such as, Ansible, Helm or Puppet, to configure applications that implement moderately complex operational and security requirements.
  • Develop and deploy solutions in a cloud native compute platform engaging with teams.
  • Transform existing applications to cloud native applications.
  • Identify, design, implement, and manage Docker/Kubernetes virtualization infrastructure in Linux, to support moderately complex to complex operational, development, and security requirements.
  • Investigate and participate in the deployment of infrastructure and/or application monitoring, alerting, and logging tools for the DevOps infrastructure.
  • Document and version control the IT infrastructure and/or applications, using Git and Confluence; track/report work status in tickets using JIRA.
  • Support and improve GitLab CI/CD system used for automating deployments of infrastructure servers, Kubernetes cluster(s) and applications.
  • Implement automation tools to help with deploying, troubleshooting and maintaining applications and/or cluster environments.
  • Design, implement and manage build and release pipelines.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

  • Develop repeatable software stacks and automate their deployment and configuration across multiple environments.
  • Incorporate security checks and audits into CI/CD system, and implement security solutions with security teams.
  • Extend Kubernetes to help simplify usage, operations, and user applications.
  • Collaborate on a strategy for fostering the adoption and utilization of cloud native technologies with other groups in the lab.

Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and projects.
  • Broad experience interacting with computer security personnel to provide input to computer security plans, ensuring computer security compliance, monitoring systems for general health, security incidents, and other events, and developing security configurations that meet cyber requirements.
  • Broad experience with software development practices.
  • Experience with Linux environments and configurations.
  • Broad experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and projects.
  • Ability to set priorities and independently resolve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sufficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and ability to work independently, under limited direction, in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • Advanced knowledge of and significant technical experience with Linux operating systems, virtual environments (Vagrant, VMware or Kubevirt), containerized environments (Docker, Podman or Kubernetes) and/or related hardware.
  • Significant experience architecting, implementing and maintaining build and release pipelines leveraging CI/CD systems.
  • Significant experience as a technical lead on advanced projects, achieving positive results, and driving projects to closure, on time and on budget with advanced analytical skills to analyze complex systems and networks.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience designing and implementing release and workflow pipelines for cloud native applications using CI/CD systems, such as, Jenkins or Gitlab.
  • Experience with configuration management systems, such as, Ansible, Puppet, Chef or Salt.
  • Experience with Virtual environments (Vagrant, VMware or Kubevirt) and/or containerized environments (Docker, Podman or Kubernetes), as well as experience implementing security for cloud environments.
