Job Description

We have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of quantum information and sensing. We are looking for candidates interested in exploring the materials challenges in ion traps and mitigating them through design. You will apply your expertise in atomic physics and laser optics to plan, build and conduct experiments. You will collaborate with advanced manufacturing experts to model and design novel 3D ion traps. In this position, you may also apply your expertise in quantum information to superconducting devices in the LLNL Quantum Device and Integration Testbed (QuDIT) facility.  This position is in the Quantum Coherent Device Physics Group, Condensed Matter Section of the Physics Division.

In this role you will 

  • Design and build an experimental capability to trap ions and use it to characterize the performance of new ion trap designs for quantum computing and measure electric field noise in novel ion traps.
  • Model and design 3D ion traps for fabrication with 3d printing.
  • Present formal and informal overviews of research progress at weekly meetings.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in international conferences.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • PhD in Experimental Physics or a related field.
  • Experience with experimental atomic physics techniques, such as laser spectroscopy of atoms or atom-like defects or laser cooling.
  • Experience in laser optics and radio frequency systems, such as frequency stabilization, free space and fiber alignment, and imaging.
  • Experience with electromagnetic modeling in Ansys High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS), Ansys Maxwell 3D, Comsol or similar.
  • Significant experience with control software and data analysis in python or a similar programming language.
  • Ability to work independently on technical tasks, influence technical objectives, to provide in depth analysis, and develop unique technical solutions.
  • Initiative, interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisicipliary team environment with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment, prepare written reports and present and explain technical information.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems.
  • Experience with FPGA development, analog electronics and/or quantum optimal control.
  • Experience in Cryogenic systems, with particular emphasis on radio frequency measurements.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
