Pay Range

$136,500 - $183,888 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We're looking for a Quality Assurance Quality Control Analyst (QAQC) in the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate at LLNL. You will collaborate with technical personnel, laboratory analysts, and scientists to assure analytical data and processes meet appropriate quality control standards.  This position acts as the implementation lead for the International Standards Organization ISO/IEC 17025 Testing and calibration laboratories. In addition, this role will support American Industrial Hygiene Association - Laboratory Accreditation Program (AIHA-LAP), LLC and CA ELAP designated Quality Manager.  This position is in the Data Management and QAQC group within the Technical Services Department of ES&H.

In this role you will 

  • Collaborate with a staff of scientific technologists/associates, including work planning and control; schedule training, conduct regular meetings, mentoring; and prepare and revise instructions and procedures.
  • Provide oversight to ensure that the Radiation Calibration Laboratory (RCL) and Industrial Hygiene Laboratory (IHIL) are compliant and/or consistent with requirements under ISO-17025.
  • Prepare and evaluate quality control (QC) charts for a wide variety of analyses and sample types and prepare periodic QA/QC reports for management.
  • Perform estimated measurement uncertainty calculations and trend analysis.
  • Implement and maintain QC standards. Develop and maintain quality assurance (QA) procedures.
  • Identify and report QA issues and problems to management and make recommendations to resolve.
  • Represent the organization in QA/QC related activities with outside auditors and assists with audit preparations. Audit laboratory operations, procedures, methods, logbooks and deficiency resolution activities.
  • Monitor and assess laboratory performance in providing external calibration services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, an applicable applied science, or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent work.
  • Ability to become qualified as a data reviewer and approver for the calibrations performed in the Radioactivity Calibration Laboratory, Industrial Hygiene Laboratory, and other analytical laboratories.
  • Knowledge of analytical certification systems, such as ISO 17025, American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Laboratory Accreditation Program, California State Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP), The NELAC Institute (TNI) certifications, and DOE Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP). 
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge in analytical QA/QC programs.
  • Advanced analytical decision-making and problem-solving abilities to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, and recommend actions/solutions to complex problems.
  • Significant organizational experience working independently and in team environments managing complex projects, producing quality deliverables, and meeting challenging deadlines.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of analytical and calibration methods associated with Environmental, Safety and Health.
  • Familiarity with software QA involving classification, characterization, risk grading, verification, and validation of software utilized in chemical and radiological laboratories.
  • Experience managing critical measuring and testing equipment inventories.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL.  Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
