Your work will involve mapping and documenting particles by SEM, analyzing them for trace element composition by EDX, and subsequently analyzing them by Raman spectroscopy. This opportunity is in the Chemical and Isotopic Sciences group in the Nuclear and Chemicals Sciences (NACS) Division and will provide the experience to prepare you to successfully pursue advanced graduate studies in cosmochemistry, experimental astrophysics, or related fields.

In this role you will

  • Acquire SEM/EDX maps of samples.
  • Find and map specific, µm-sized particles and document them for future relocation.
  • Perform Raman microscopy on samples and develop the respective techniques at LLNL.
  • Interact with NACS staff to perform these analyses for multiple projects.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook to ensure results are properly annotated and organized for reports.
  • Present formal and informal overviews of analytical process flow at group meetings.
  • Interact with and support Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group members and the principal investigator on multiple projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geochemistry, Physics, Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Familiarity with SEM, EDX, and/or Raman.
  • Experience developing using program skills for scientific purposes (e.g., Python, LabView).
  • Familiarity with working in clean areas with contamination-prone samples.
  • Experience with data record-keeping in a laboratory environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and present research results.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in Geochemistry, Physics, Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience with SEM/EDX and/or Raman analyses of particles.
  • Advanced programming experience (e.g., Python, LabView, etc.).
