Job Description

We have multiple openings for Electronics Technologists to support the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Power Conditioning Systems operations and maintenance.

NIF is the world’s most powerful laser system, capable of producing over 1.8 MJ of optical energy. Utilizing a background involving generalized electronics technical support, we will train you to operate the involved specialized high-powered, high-voltage systems using computer controls following detailed procedures.  These systems couple high voltage electronics and sophisticated controls hardware and software for the proper operation of the 192 beams involved with the NIF main laser.  These systems include: high voltage power supplies, pulsed power hardware and circuits, analog, and digital controls hardware and software, embedded computers and diagnostics.

You will be responsible for operating both systems remotely using Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and will perform site maintenance across multiple engineering disciplines and in collaboration with the lead operators, shot directors, system managers and electrical engineering support personnel.

NIF is a 24/7 operational facility.  These team members typically work on a three 12 hr and four 12 hr alternating schedule to support operations, with the last 2 hours of each shift being overtime.  The day shift hours are from 06:30-19:30 and the owl shift hours are from 18:30-07:30.  Day shifts work either Sunday-Tuesday and every other Wednesday, or Thursday to Saturday and every other Wednesday.  Owl shifts work either Sunday to Tuesday and every other Saturday night or Wednesday to Friday and every other Saturday night.  These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Operate and provide general technical support for the Power Conditioning System (PCS) and Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cell (PEPC) systems through the high-level computer control system following detailed procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain the PCS, PEPC and Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) using oscilloscopes, computer-based diagnostics, multi-meters and other diagnostic tools.
  • Perform site maintenance including electrical distribution, high voltage gear, digital and analog circuits, vacuum and compressed air controls, and/or major system configurations.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the PEPC Controls and Diagnostics (C&D).
  • Perform acceptance testing of the plasma pulse generator (PPG) and the PEPC Turbo Pump to insure ready for service at NIF.
  • Provide accurate documentation of moderately complex problems to effect immediate repairs or pass down for next shift.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation regarding corrective actions for all repairs and routine maintenance.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex electronic components and systems.
  • Acquire and analyze data and provide solutions and alternate approaches to moderately complex problems using individual creativity and judgment while working under general supervision.
  • Contribute to moderately complex preliminary design concepts and engineering decision process.
