We have multiple openings for highly qualified and motivated scientists and engineers to join us to solve critical climate change problems as a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member in Infrastructure & Climate Analysis. In this role, you will perform original research and participate in multidisciplinary projects that leverage emerging technologies and cutting-edge tools from across the Laboratory to strengthen our national security and civilian infrastructure sectors to combat threats from a changing climate. These positions will be located in the Systems & Policy Analysis Group, Computational Engineering Division (CED), in LLNL’s Engineering Directorate.
In this role you will
- Work in multidisciplinary teams to assess, analyze, and optimize infrastructure systems under uncertain environments and various climate change scenarios.
- Evaluate existing and develop new metrics to assess system vulnerability, reliability, and resilience in light of direct and indirect climate change trends and threats.
- Build and/or expand existing complex infrastructure models to incorporate climate change-based threat drivers and associated uncertainties.
- Build and/or expand existing mathematical optimization models and quantitative decision support frameworks.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars, and meetings
- Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators and visit field sites.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- PhD in an applied quantitative analysis field such as operations research, applied mathematics, computer science, industrial, electrical, or mechanical engineering, or similar field.
- Research experience in one or more key areas: infrastructure system (such as electric grid or natural gas pipeline networks) expansion and operations planning, infrastructure system resilience quantification and analysis, quantitative climate change impacts analysis, complex systems modeling and analysis, and optimization under uncertainty.
- Experience leveraging one or more quantitative analysis software tools in an original research setting. Examples include mixed-integer programming solvers (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, and SCIP) and algebraic modeling using languages (e.g., AMPL, Pyomo, and JuMP).
- Experience programming in Python, including libraries such as pandas, PyTorch, and related data science and machine learning libraries.
- Experience undertaking original research and communicating findings in peer-reviewed publications and/or other professional settings.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to engage fully in a dynamic workplace and to disseminate and publish results of R&D.
Qualifications We Desire
- Commercial, industrial, or non-profit work experience in infrastructure analysis and decision support areas via internships, professional employment, or volunteering.
- Knowledge of and experience working with global climate models and data.
- Knowledge of and experience with uncertainty quantification and propagation in the context of complex system models.
- Experience using the Atlassian tool suite.

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
