Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research with the Multi-scale Modeling Framework (MMF) configuration of the DOE Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). E3SM-MMF has been built to leverage GPU acceleration on cutting edge supercomputers, enabling decadal scale experiments to be conducted much more efficiently than is possible on other MMF models. The prospective candidate will work with a team of scientists to analyze model output from historical simulations covering several decades and compare to observational datasets, and then synthesize the results to assess the fidelity of the simulated climate in E3SM-MMF. The prospective candidate will also be encouraged to propose sensitivity experiments with E3SM-MMF and document the results to expand our understanding of this relatively new approach to atmospheric modeling. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth, & Energy Division of the Physical Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct creative and independent research to assess the fidelity of the simulated climate in E3SM-MMF
  • Publish research results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences
  • Pursue independent research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory
  • Communicate research to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science or closely related discipline
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: climate dynamics, cloud physics, atmospheric modelling, climate data analysis
  • Proficient in data analysis with a scientific programming language, preferably python 
  • Experience working with large datasets from climate models or observational data products
  • Effective ability to collaborate with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds and ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.


Qualifications we desire

  • Familiarity with a multi-scale modeling framework (i.e. super-parameterization)

Security Clearance
