Job Description

We have an opening for a Structural Engineer who will provide technical support to ongoing operations and modifications in LLNL’s nuclear facilities. This work includes structural calculations, designs, and design reviews as well as the development and implementation of the methodology to address the issues from the LLNL site Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) report and the resulting seismic evaluations of the LLNL Plutonium Facility. This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) organization.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Determine the operability and structural integrity of building safety structures, systems, and components (SSCs) using subject-matter expert level technical knowledge and recommend corrective action to facility management when required.

  • Provide recommendations to WCI and facility management and senior LLNL and DOE managers on the potential impact of studies and evaluations, such as the PSHA, on building SSCs.

  • Identify and provide recommendations for all necessary modifications to WCI and facility management regarding the facility and facility-supported SSCs and approve the resulting proposed physical modifications.

  • Manage system modification/construction projects and configuration of building SSCs through drawings, procedures, and design documentation.

  • As the subject-matter expert, provide technical expertise, support, and innovative solutions to highly complex issues related to the design and implementation of equipment replacement, repair, and structural modifications of the building safety SSCs.

  • Develop and implement structural calculations, design criteria, design drawings, sketches and specifications for facility structural modifications and upgrades.

  • Develop detailed structural designs and specifications; evaluate methods being used; resolve highly complex technical problems, and review drawings.

  • Provide day-to-day subject-matter expert level consultation and approval on technical matters related to structural engineering issues.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the TSS.5 level

  • Provide expert level knowledge in the state-of-the-art application of structural engineering principles for resolution of highly unusual and complex issues.

  • Exercise highly independent judgement and initiative in determining methods and techniques in work assignments.

  • Serves as the spokesperson for specialized projects.

  • Participate on structural design standard committees within LLNL and externally, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Structural Engineering or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.

  • Highly advanced knowledge and significant experience in the design, implementation, and operations of facility systems.

  • Significant experience developing and reviewing structural calculations and specifications, drawings, and sketches, and determining design criteria for facility structural modifications, renovations, and upgrades on numerous large-scale and small-scale projects.

  • Expert ability to identify and provide recommendations to facility and senior management regarding facility and safety equipment modifications with proven record of implementation where the resolution methodology frequently is not clearly defined.

  • Ability to identify, design and solve highly complex technical and multidisciplinary problems in a timely and cost-effective manner where there is a high degree of ambiguity regarding approaches to problem resolution.

  • Ability to work independently with considerable latitude to accomplish multiple parallel tasks.

  • Expert level communication, facilitation and collaboration skills to effectively present, explain and make recommendations to facility and senior management.

  • Knowledge of structural engineering standards, policies, and practices.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.5 Level

  • Extensive experience and ability to develop, champion, and lead cutting edge solutions and concepts for highly unusual and complex issues or problems.

  • Extensive experience applying state-of-the-art structural engineering concepts and practices.

  • Expert ability to set high level goals, develop strategic plans for action, and accomplish program/project goals and objectives.
