Job Description

We have an opening for a Scientific Technologist/Sr. Scientific Technologist.  You will maintain sensitive electrical and mechanical systems as well as perform calibrations and minor repairs for critical radiological measuring and test equipment (M&TE) using laboratory techniques and tools. In addition, you will irradiate samples from Dosimetry and other programmatic customers using radiation generating devices (RGDs) and sealed radioactive sources. All work will be performed within a strict quality assurance framework driven by regulatory and LLNL-directed policies and procedures.  This position is in the Radiation Calibration & Spectroscopy (RC&S) group in ES&H Technical Services.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot and make mechanical and/or electrical repairs to critical radiation detection M&TE according to approved procedures, meeting regulatory requirements and customer needs.
  • Safely operate RCL Irradiator Systems and Radiation Generating Device and irradiate customer samples as prescribed.
  • Conduct radiological measurements and/or other tasks as determined by the RC&S Group Leader.
  • Maintain, operate, and calibrate RC&S equipment, including radioactive sources, as prescribed by approved RC&S procedures within a strict Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) framework.
  • Generate and maintain records of calibration and repair activities in logbooks and databases according to approved procedures.
  • Identify problems and anomalies to RC&S supervision and suggest corrective actions and solutions.
  • Effectively communicate with RC&S group members, scientists, engineers, skilled technical personnel and laboratory customers.
  • Provide routine and preventative maintenance as well as repairs for equipment in the WBC/Spec Lab.
  • Including pressure safety systems, and O2 monitoring systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 502.3 level

  • Independently identify and develop procedural efficiencies in order to increase sample throughput and overall laboratory productivity.
  • Train technicians in the RCL on calibration technique.
  • Operate complex spectroscopy and in-vivo measurement equipment.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship 
  • Associate degree in physical sciences or related field with some related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment with intermediate knowledge of and experience using a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Willingness to work with radioactive materials and radioactive sealed sources.
  • Ability to write and follow technical procedures effectively. Ability to report results and identify problems.
  • Knowledge of ES&H rules and regulations, QA/QC guidelines, and experience implementing QA/QC processes and programs.
  • Ability to work well on multiple assignments and balance priorities, with attention-to-detail and good time-management skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and communicate moderately complex technical information to all levels of personnel and management.
  • Working knowledge of computers and maintaining electronic records. Experience with general computer software, such as Adobe products and the MS Office Suite.

Additional qualifications at the 502.3 level

  • Experience with complex laboratory instrumentation, including calibration fundamentals and knowledge of ANSI N323AB.
  • Knowledge of radiation fundamentals.
  • Experience in writing technical procedures.

Security Clearance
