Job Description

We have an opening for a Health Physicist. You will provide comprehensive technical expertise for the operations of the Whole Body Counting and Spectroscopy laboratories to remain Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP)-accredited and compliant with LLNL policies, Department of Energy Orders, and federal regulations. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. Depending on business needs, you will be provided opportunities to support other health physics functions.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide high quality measurements and evaluation of results for internally-deposited radionuclides in the human body by direct methods using unique and moderately complex measurement systems.
  • Provide moderately complex technical support and calculations in planning, executing, and interpreting technical assignments and data needed to determine whether LLNL workers have had uptakes of radioactive material.
  • Provide QA/QC technical support (e.g., preparing and evaluating QC samples and analyzing performance test samples for the DOELAP accreditation) as the lead analyst for the LLNL direct Bioassay Program activities.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise operational procedures and technical basis documents for the Whole Body Counting and Spectroscopy laboratories to improve quality, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Provide emergency radioanalytical support to onsite and offsite radiological incidents.
  • Participate in the investigation of incidents involving radiation and make recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide technical dosimetric and analytical support to the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program.
  • Assist with health physics support during audits, inspections, and assessments by internal and external entities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level

  • Act as the point of contact (POC) or alternate POC, as assigned, for technical issues regarding radiation spectroscopy.
  • Provide guidance and clarification to, and answer questions from ES&H health physicists on matters related to radiation spectroscopy. Mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Respond to radiological emergencies and incidents on site, participate in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiation and make recommendations to all levels of management regarding spectroscopic results; provide HP solutions during assessments, inspections, and site verifications by internal and external agencies.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or another related technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and ability to perform independent work.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively write, present, explain and communicate moderately complex information to all levels of personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing moderately-complex to complex projects and meeting schedules.
  • Experience with radiological instrumentation, including spectroscopy systems.
  • Analytical and computational skills including experience with computer systems, databases, and software, including Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Ability to negotiate, recommend, and implement solutions for moderately complex problems.
  • Effective organizational skills with detail orientation necessary to coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting concurrent tasks in an environment with frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow-through.
  • Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory protection equipment and to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes polygraph examination, physical and psychological assessment, and random drug and alcohol testing.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

  • Significant experience leading independent radiological spectroscopic work and providing technical direction/leadership to health and safety staff on HP related matters and providing emergency response and participation in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiological hazards.   
  • Advanced experience in health physics or a related field, with thorough knowledge of DOELAP or equivalent requirements.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders. Ability to negotiate, recommend and implement solutions to highly complex problems.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Health Physics, or another related technical area.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Security Clearance
