Job Description

We have an opening for a Lead Automation Engineer. You will be responsible for leading a team of Automation Engineers responsible for developing optics processing machines and upgrading existing equipment used in the Optics & Materials Science & Technologies (OMST) facilities that support the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will have a mastery of control system design, lead OMST engineering to plan for future long-term needs, and manage complex projects with multidisciplinary members and components. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Manage task assignments for controls group and participate in planning and reporting for OMST Engineering & Maintenance.
  • Provide advanced electrical engineering solutions for design, assembly, calibration, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical systems.
  • Oversee electrical engineering for installation and commissioning of new and upgraded optics processing and metrology equipment in support of NIF.
  • Specify and procure complex and specialized instrumentation and equipment.
  • Author and review formal system documentation for entire group, such as Software Requirements Specifications (SRSs) and Commissioning Test Plans (CTPs).
  • Oversee and architect controls systems including hardware and software integration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on major controls projects and multidisciplinary efforts to positively impact the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Assess strategic technical needs for development of future optic processing capabilities and controls technologies.
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex to highly complex projects with multidisciplinary members and components.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of and significant experience with electrical engineering design concepts related to complex assembly, calibration, troubleshooting, power distribution, and testing of electrical machine control systems.
  • Significant experience with and advanced knowledge of motion control, stepper or servo motors, and position feedback.
  • Significant experience with reading and interpreting mechanical, optical, and electrical specifications using drawings and procedure manuals.
  • Significant experience with complex instrumentation and/or industrial controls systems (analog and digital) design.
  • Broad experience with multiple computer programming platforms.
  • Ability to translate potentially vague customer requirements into concise control systems hardware and software specifications.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Subject matter expert knowledge and substantial experience in the performance analysis and tuning of highly complex motion control systems.
  • Substantial experience in developing and tuning advanced controls algorithms; extensive experience in two or more of the following areas: industrial controls, instrumentation, motion controls, software architecting.
  • Substantial experience in managing multidisciplinary projects.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Experience developing PC-based human machine interfaces (HMIs).

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Some positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement above).  If you are selected and a clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
