We have an opening for a Laser & Optics Postdoctoral Researcher to aid us in advancing the science of high-power laser diode devices. If you have a generalized skill set in the design and operation of optical and optoelectronic instrumentation, we can get you the needed exposure to partner with other staff members to get up to speed on the diode specific work. You will partner in developing characterization tools and methods for semiconductor and optoelectronic devices to enable breakthrough performance in device power, brightness, efficiency, or other required characteristics. You will be part of technical team that develops advanced diode laser technologies for integration into next-generation laser systems. This position is within the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) division within the Engineering Directorate.
In this role you will
- Conduct research in and development for enhancing laser diode technology.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance the position will need to be cleared to a Q/L after hire which requires U.S. citizenship.
- PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
- Experience in the design and operation of optical and optoelectronic instrumentation.
- Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Experience developing independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Effective initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with and theoretical understanding of high-power semiconductor laser diode devices.
