Job Description

We have an opening for an Energy Systems Postdoctoral Researcher to advance our diverse energy portfolio spanning climate resilient infrastructure, distributed energy grids, and carbon drawdown.  You will perform original research and participate in interdisciplinary projects that leverage emerging technologies to simultaneously strengthen energy infrastructure and combat climate change. In this role, you will contribute to Livermore’s Energy Programs, including Energy and Resource Security and Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience to design the next generation of sustainable and secure energy systems.  This position is in the Energy group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division.

 

In this role you will:

  • Assess and design energy technologies and strategies that substantially improve climate, cyber, and physical resilience over state-of-the-art energy systems.
  • Analyze the security, performance, cost, and/or lifecycle impacts of diverse energy innovations.
  • Assess the resources that are available and required to meet resilience and sustainability goals at local, regional, and national scales.
  • Participate in complex projects that field-demonstrate energy resilience and/or carbon drawdown technologies.
  • Communicate the outputs of climate and infrastructure resilience R&D to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Publish analysis and results of your research in the peer reviewed literature.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD. in an energy-focused field such as Civil and Environmental Engineering, Earth and Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Research experience in the evaluation and/or development of clean, resilient energy/environmental technology, including energy networks or carbon management.
  • Experience with formal energy and infrastructure systems analysis tools such as risk assessment matrices, lifecycle assessment (LCA), and technoeconomic analysis (TEA).
  • Experience in the analysis of climate impacts on energy systems.
  • Experience working in a team setting on energy resilience or sustainability projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to disseminate and publish the results of R&D.

Qualifications we desire

  • Commercial, industrial, or non-profit work experience in energy and/or infrastructure domains via internships, professional employment, or volunteering.

  • Experience analyzing security, energy, or environmental policy.

Security Clearance
