Job Description

We have an opening for an experienced systems analyst to independently lead, develop, research, design, and analyze models of the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).  You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and interface with sponsors, modeling personnel, and subject matter experts from across the NNSA and DOD nuclear enterprise.  This position supports the Associate Program Leader for Nuclear Weapons Evaluation and Planning within the Weapons Infrastructure Program and reports administratively to the Systems and Policy Analysis Group in Engineering’s Computational Engineering Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Lead multi-disciplinary technical teams in the development and exercising of modeling and simulation tools to understand and inform the stockpile program of record and potential excursions.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for evaluation of future stockpile systems and requirements to be used in these modeling and simulation tools.
  • Maintain effective collaborations and working relationships with the NNSA and DOD enterprise modeling communities, including assisting in engagement of relevant decision makers.
  • Develop creative program growth opportunities through interactions with current and potential sponsors and creation of proposals.
  • Support interagency studies related to the US nuclear weapons enterprise and provide relevant subject-matter expertise.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Develop and implement enterprise capability plans and prepare and present proposals for future modeling and simulation efforts.
  • Build and maintain effective collaborations and working relationships with the NNSA and DOD enterprise modeling communities, including direct engagement of relevant decision makers.
  • Provide technical leadership, management, planning, and support of activities for special studies as directed by senior laboratory leadership.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics/computer science, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Working knowledge of systems modeling and analysis and the nuclear security enterprise.
  • Experience working in a program supporting the Stockpile Stewardship Program or at a Department of Energy Laboratory or other FFRDC community.
  • Significant experience developing and presenting project proposals to stakeholders and developing project plans, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Significant experience collaborating with the Department of Defense, in particular the Military Departments, Combatant Commands, and/or the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate with internal and external teams, and advise and influence senior management and external sponsors.
  • Experience leading teams of employees from diverse backgrounds and mentoring junior staff members.

Additional qualifications, at the SES.4 level

  • Expert working knowledge of systems modeling and analysis related to the US stockpile and a broad knowledge of the nuclear security enterprise.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, external partners, and external sponsors.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge and significant experience as a project manager or principal investigator of projects with differing priorities, loosely defined deliverables, and high visibility.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience analyzing the nuclear stockpile program of record, including collaborations with NNSA headquarters, labs, and plants.
  • Experience working for the Department of Energy or the Department of Defense.
  • Established scientific contributions and external recognition, demonstrated by a publication record or other professional activities.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Some positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement above).  If you are selected and a clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
