Job Description

We have multiple openings for Engineering Design Associates or Senior Engineering Design Associates to work independently by collaborating with scientists, engineers, and top-level technical personnel to provide innovative technical and management expertise in mechanical engineering to support the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) groups. You will conduct research to find solutions to engineering problems while providing leadership including developing, designing, documenting, and analyzing highly complex mechanical systems on for the NIF program These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Independently generate and drive original design solutions that address requirements and constraints while supporting solutions with advanced analytic skills; includes translation into detailed layouts and assemblies.
  • Develop supporting documentation for design solutions that may include analysis, schedules, costing, and procedures.
  • Capture design solutions via Creo Parametric and safety notes.
  • Maintain documentation in the Windchill/ELM (Enterprise Lifecycle Management) configuration management (CM) system.
  • Provide technical mentorship to fellow LSEO designers and lead workforce needs, schedule, job scope, train, and direct work assignments.
  • Provide high level application and engineering development using industry best and newest practices on complex problems and tasks.
  • Participate in formal design review process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 339.2 level

  • Lead technical personal team, assigning tasks, defining approaches, and overseeing work; may have supervisory authority, responsible for training requirements.
  • Plan, organize, budget, and lead multiple projects of significant scope.
  • Mentor subordinates with specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills specific to assignment.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Significant applied experience with Creo Parametric 4.
  • Experience working in Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software and/or CM system Rel 11.
  • Advanced knowledge of and significant experience analyzing complex to highly complex structural and flow conditions with both hand calculations and finite element analysis.
  • Ability to develop, analyze and interpret complex to highly complex design requirements, and use creativity, independent discretion, and judgment to provide original and innovative solutions to design problems with advanced engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to make independent technical decisions that have significant consequences to broad segments of NIF Programs while working under general supervision.
  • Ability to manage both individual activities, and those of others, with multiple components requiring attention to detail, accuracy, and independent follow-through.
  • Advanced written, verbal, feedback, and presentation communication skills necessary to interact effectively with multi-disciplinary teams in various roles.

Additional qualifications at the 339.2 level

  • Advanced technical knowledge needed to address highly complex technical problems with ability to perform self-directed work, under minimal supervision.
  • Experience leading and/or mentoring technical personal with highly advanced work, assigning tasks, defining approaches, and overseeing work; includes experience developing staffing plans, performance reviews, making promotional recommendations, and handling disciplinary actions.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, budgeting, and leading multiple projects of significant scope.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with project management methods and tools.
  • Experience with GLOVIA, LoCoS, and other NIF IT software.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Some positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement above).  If you are selected and a clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
