Job Description

We have an opening for a Chief Electronics Engineer (Chief EE). You will be a part of the Engineering Directorate Senior Management Team responsible for managing all aspects of a multidisciplinary organization consisting of 2,500 employees who support all major Laboratory programs, as well as internally funded R&D efforts. Your primary roles are to ensure the integrity and quality of the electronics engineering discipline practiced throughout the Laboratory, serve as the SME for electronics engineering discipline for the Laboratory, lead the development of the electronics engineering workforce, and manage engineering mentoring and leadership development programs in partnership with Chief Mechanical Engineer (ME) and the Engineering Senior Management Team. This position will be in the Engineering Associate Director’s Office.

In this role you will

  • Ensure the integrity and quality of the EE discipline throughout the laboratory.
  • Oversee the Electronics Engineering Design Safety Standards Committee, which develops technical guidance and institutional standards that apply to engineering activities conducted throughout the Laboratory. In partnership with the Chief ME, oversee the Laboratory’s Design Review process, lead or oversee design reviews, oversee hardware acceptance procedures, review and sign-off on external shipment of LLNL custom designed instruments or systems, and lead or oversee periodic monitoring of facilities and safety systems where high risk or serious compliance issues are involved. Lead or oversee the resolution of technical issues identified in reviews and approve final completion of required actions.
  • Lead efforts and collaborate with the Engineering Division Leaders to plan, review, and coordinate electronics engineering activities across the Laboratory. These efforts relate to program and technical support, Engineering S&T development, facilities operation, staffing, and personnel development.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the Directorate in an effort to establish, monitor, and update Electronics Engineering policies, standards, and procedures.  Review, concur, or approve official Directorate documentation related to safety, quality, and personnel development.
  • Provide oversight of the Electrical Safety Officer and the Electrical Program-Authority Having Jurisdiction. Represent the Engineering Directorate as primary interface to the ESH-led Electrical Safety Program, the institutional Electrical Safety Board, and the institutional Electrical Safety Committee.
  • Support the Engineering Senior Management Team in setting the strategic direction for and oversee the recruiting and development of high-quality engineers/scientists that fosters long term growth and productivity. Create an environment where individuals can attain their maximum potential. Partner with the Chief ME to manage the Directorate’s Leadership Development Programs.
  • Support the Engineering Senior Management Team in the engineer/scientist ranking process in conjunction with the Chief Mechanical Engineer.
  •  Perform other duties as assigned.


  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Master’s degree in electronics engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive experience in analysis, design, testing, field deployment, and project management that has led to the successful resolution of complex problems in a high technology research and development environment.
  • Broad knowledge of and experience with electronic control, instrumentation, digital design, analog circuitry, and power systems.
  • Experience leading, managing, and coordinating technical teams to meet programmatic goals across organizational lines. Significant experience in personnel management including supervision, performance management, and career development.
  • Expert communication skills necessary to explain, present, direct, negotiate, influence, and coordinate technical or programmatic activities with senior managers and staff internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Expert problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently advise, counsel, recommend, and develop solutions on a wide variety of management level technical and programmatic issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with Engineering standards and practices.
  • Experience working closely with program directorates, and in-depth knowledge of the electronics engineering topics associated with one or more major Laboratory program.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in electronics engineering or related field.
  • Familiar with high voltage systems, grounding, and shielding; computer networks and applications; and/or systems engineering and analysis.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Project Manager, or extensive equivalent experience.
  • Experience in external interactions, collaborations with NNSA, DOE, DHS, DOD, and other government agencies.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory. Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).
