Job Description

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct basic and applied research in computational methods for supersonic and hypersonic flows. You will work independently to extend and develop physics based simulation capabilities for massively parallel, large-eddy and direct numerical simulations of aerospace vehicles in supersonic and hypersonic flow environments. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct research and development in one or more of the following areas relating to the simulation of supersonic and hypersonic flows: turbulent boundary layer models for large-eddy simulation, ablation models and flow/surface chemistry arising from aeroshell damage in flight, radiation solvers for aerospace applications or other physics applicable to supersonic and/or hypersonic flows.
  • Develop and implement High Performance Computing (HPC) algorithms and simulations for the examination of these or other nonlinear, transient, multiscale, and multiple physical phenomena relating to supersonic and hypersonic flows.
  • Work with engineers and scientists to identify and solve challenging design optimization problems, determine the most open design spaces and manufacturing constraints, and to construct optimized designs for validation and testing.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the fields of aerodynamics and/or fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with numerical methods, and modeling and simulation tools for turbulent and/or high-speed flows using large-eddy or direct numerical simulation techniques.
  • Experience with advanced C++, C and/or Fortran95 algorithm development.
  • Knowledge and experience with massively-parallel algorithm development and high-performance computing.
  • Experience managing several concurrent tasks.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience running fluid simulations on platforms with heterogeneous (CPU/GPU) architectures, and/or porting of standard MPI-based codes to those platforms.
  • Experience with conjugate heat transfer and/or reactive chemistry in aerospace applications.
  • Experience with experiment design and data acquisition.
  • Publication list commensurate with ongoing professional growth and experience writing high-quality research proposals.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
