Job Description

In this role, you will 

  • Develop proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of radiochemical data from nuclear weapons.
  •  Conduct research to advance new capabilities for interpreting radiochemical data from nuclear explosions.
  • Design and participate in experiments to acquire data that will test new research concepts.
  • Work independently on complex technical tasks requiring in-depth data analysis, and develop unique technical solutions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers.
  • Communicate results to internal and external sponsors via written technical reports and oral presentations.
  • Write research proposals to gain new funding for projects from sponsors.
  • Ability to travel on an occasional basis and interact / collaborate with colleagues in conference or training settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • MS or PhD in chemistry, physics, geochemistry, or nuclear engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant ability to perform independent analysis of technical problems involving complex data sets and communicate results.
  • Significant experience and ability to track details without losing sight of broader scientific objectives.
  •  Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature or equivalent classified research documents.
  • Experience in radiochemistry, radioactive counting techniques, and/or analytical chemistry methods
  •   Experience with statistical analysis of datasets
  •  Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present technical information.
  •  Initiative and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, including the ability to provide / receive constructive criticism.
  • Ability to lead research teams and manage large technical collaborations.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  An L or Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.  For additional information please see DOE Order 472.2.

Pre-Employment Drug Test
