Job Description

In this role you will:

  • Perform innovative studies using performance metrics to determine the pathways towards improving the predictive abilities of models.
  • Responsible for a team in the development of holistic assessments of Earth System Model performance.
  • Contribute to the development of Earth system model analysis code standards and promote their inter-operability.
  • Organize the scientific community around the development of model metrics for multiple sub-disciplines of Earth System science through workshops, white papers, and similar activities.
  • Lead the development of major proposals to DOE and other sponsors.
  • Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Travel as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • PhD in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  •  Subject matter expertise in analyzing climate and Earth system model simulations and comparisons with observations in a multi-model context.
  • Advanced skills to effectively perform independent research.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in software development using Python.
  • Experience in designing and performing simulations using coupled climate or Earth system models.
  • Experience leading groups in climate and Earth system model evaluation.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  An L or Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.  For additional information please see DOE Order 472.2.
